Freedom Rider: Black Politics and Bernie Sanders

by BAR editor and columnist Margaret Kimberley

The Democratic presidential primary has turned into a real battle, but not ideologically, since “there is no leftist among the Democrats.” Hillary Clinton clings to Barack Obama like a life raft, mentioning his name 21 times in a debate with Bernie Sanders, while the Congressional Black Caucus clings to Hillary like a dollar bill. The historical Black political consensus on peace and social justice is nowhere represented in the “quadrennial circus.”

Freedom Rider: Black Politics and Bernie Sanders

by BAR editor and columnist Margaret Kimberley

“CBC members outdid one another dismissing Sanders.”

Bernie Sanders looked a bit uncomfortable in Al Sharpton’s strong embrace. He ought to. After all, no one wants to be hugged by King Rat.

The sad state of black politics has been on full display for the past week. Bernie Sanders was relegated to afterthought status until he split the Iowa caucus vote with Hillary Clinton and then won the New Hampshire primary. His victory there now makes him a serious challenger to Clinton. As his fortunes shifted, so did black politics, but not in a good way.

The Congressional Black Caucus’s Political Action Committee hurriedly endorsed Clinton but of course the casual observer thinks that CBC congressional members did the endorsing. Instead it was the lobbying arm that represents Big Pharma and cigarette manufacturers. All of the CBC corruptions were revealed in one fell swoop.

While Sharpton invited Sanders to Harlem for lunch, another argument brewed over whether Bernie Sanders was or wasn’t in photos from the 1960s and what they did or didn’t say about his civil rights activism. CBC members then outdid one another dismissing Sanders, that is to say, staying in the Clinton camp. Charles Rangel proclaimed that he didn’t know any black people who knew Bernie Sanders. John Lewis said he never saw Sanders at any pivotal moment in the 1960s but he did know Bill and Hillary Clinton. Although he later had to admit that he didn’t really know them at the time either and conceded that Bernie went to a march or two. Sanders supporter Keith Ellison strayed off the ranch altogether and said he wasn’t consulted about the CBC PAC endorsement at all.

“All of the CBC corruptions were revealed in one fell swoop.”

Meanwhile, Ta-Nehisi Coates was asked who he planned to vote for and he said Bernie Sanders. This is the same Ta-Nehisi Coates who made a big deal about Sanders’ opposition to reparations. The statement was rather an awkward one for the anointed black spokesperson who very recently took Sanders to task. He did seem to be a bit embarrassed and then added it wasn’t really an endorsement, and he certainly wasn’t telling anyone else what to do and he was sorry he answered the question at all. The MacArthur “genius” award fellow was not looking very smart at all.

The endless nonsense was further proof that black politics are on life support. The election of Barack Obama, the imperatives to live in fear of Republicans and/or to wait for the Democrat who is believed to have the best chance of winning are all the perpetrators. There is nothing left but to jockey for position like the CBC and keep the gravy train running or to stick a finger in the wind like Sharpton and discover that Sanders may be the one to make deals with.

While black people fall all over themselves displaying their political impotence, Sanders has learned a thing or two about black voters. Sandra Bland’s mother and Eric Garner’s daughter have endorsed him. It is indeed powerful for the families of police murder victims to have been approached and to have signed on with the challenger. But feelings for the families shouldn’t keep anyone else from asking tough questions.

“The MacArthur “genius” award fellow was not looking very smart at all.”

Has Sanders said how he would end police murder? He hasn’t. Did he present a plan for a strong Department of Justice civil rights division that would take the lead in prosecuting cops? He didn’t. Did he propose any legislative remedies to end police murder impunity? He didn’t do that either. The families of police murder victims want to hope that something will change, but so do we all. Then again, grieving relatives are no worse than members of the CBC and have better, more ethical rationales in making their decisions.

It is a good thing to question the dubious allegiance to Hillary Clinton. She and her husband were persona non grata in 2008 because of their racist appeals to white people during the campaign against Obama. Now some of the same people who proclaimed unending hatred of both Clintons are now supportive in order to keep Donald Trump/Marco Rubio/Ted Cruz out of the White House. Clinton has changed her tune too. She mentioned the president’s name 21 times in her most recent debate with Sanders. She is clinging to her former rival as if he were a life jacket. Actually he is just that for her.

“The supposed leftist may not have cackled about killing Gaddafi like Hillary Clinton did, but he didn’t oppose the intervention either.”

This election should be one for hard questions and the rejection of standard operating procedures. Obama’s departure presents an opportunity for black people to critically examine the entire premise of the quadrennial circus. Bernie Sanders may not brag about being buddies with Henry Kissinger but any such praise is faint. He dismissed the thrice elected Hugo Chavez as “a dead communist dictator.” The supposed leftist may not have cackled about killing Gaddafi like Hillary Clinton did, but he didn’t oppose the intervention either. He doesn’t want to expand NATO any further but he speaks of Russian “aggression” as if it really existed. It is in fact just a phony propaganda talking point from the Obama administration and the corporate media.

There is no leftist among the Democrats. Neither one is in sync with the true political leanings of black America. When all is said and done, whether Sanders was at a particular march with King or didn’t meet John Lewis or is or isn’t liked by Ta-Nehisi Coates is immaterial. The whole effort is immaterial and it is time for black people to do serious soul searching and reject the entire phony project. Or we can sit and wait for Al Sharpton to make his move when he thinks he sees the next president.

IMO Bernie Likely Hits 'Bern-Out' by Super-Tues & then Endorses

BILLARY!!!

Bernie's done well for himself in the 2 small lily-white states of Iowa & NH [which neighbors Bernie's Home-State of VT], by coming in a virtual tie w Billary in Iowa & trouncing her in NH. But now the race swings west [NV] & down south [SC] & IMO that's where Bernie's likely to hit a Black & Brown thick-wall around Billary!! IMO It's a shame that so many Black [& Brown] folks seem so wedded to 'Slick Willy' & Wife- Yet never--the-less they are.

Bernie can't win the Dim nomination unless he can compete w Billary for the Black & Brown vote [she's also got a lock on white-women over 40, though he's doing well w white college age kids- both guys & gals] -BUT- Till the advent of Obama, 'Slick Willy' was aka 'The 1st 'Black' Pres' & Bernie's an old white guy from small lily-white VT! Thus IMO Bernie will likely get beat convincingly in NV & then likely get steam-rolled in NC, & then the Clinton Juggernaut will be 'Back on Track'!! Berne will likely hang on till Super-Tues where IMO Billary will likely finish him off to the point of 'Bern-Out'- & then he'll endorse her!!!

Now many / most Bernie supporters don't want to hear this, & thus say things that don't really add-up- IE: Remember how Obama upset Billary's POTUS bid in 2008, Bernie can do it again! Well 1st of all Bernie in 2016 ain't Obama in 2008! Obama was a young, relatively unknown Black guy, well spoke yet seemingly a bit ‘cool & hip’, etc... Plus Obama [& Billary] were running for the Dim POTUS nomination in the wake of those despised Repugs Bush Jr's & Cheney's disastrous tenure, but now Bernie's as a Dim [& Billary too] is trying to continue Dim POTUS Obama's 'legacy'!! Such that now Bernie's even trying to take some pages out of the 'Obama-Candidate's' play book- IE: Bernie's actually co-opted Obama's 2008 campaign slogan by just changing 1 [or 2] words from: 'Change You Can Believe In' -to- 'A Future [You Can / To Believe] In'!! And Bernie [ala Obama] is hyping his vote against the Iraq Attack Pt-2 vs Billary who voted for it. Obama was also hyped as the anti-war [NOT!] candidate vs Billary- except neither Obama NOR Bernie were / are truy anti-war- just anti 'Dumb' [= Repug led] War!!!

2nd} This is a key point that thus far I've only seen one analyst even touch, in a CounterPunch article posted today: That's how key Ted Kennedy's enthusiastic endorsement of Obama was for him to be able to open a narrow lead vs Billary in 2008, for which she was never quite able to re-close that gap!! The Kennedy name carried a lot of 'juice' w Blacks along w most other Dem constituents, & also w Dim party insiders [IMO Teddy came out so forcefully for Obama in rebuke of the Billary Clinton's shady race-baiting tactics vs Obama]. But NO-One today is comparable to Ted Kennedy to boost Bernie vs Billary- except Obama himself -&- IMO that ain't gonna happen!! IMO Bernie's best hope is that Obama does NOT come right out & publicly endorse Billary- cause that would be 'Game-Over' for Bernie!!! Thus Bernie can only tell so much truth vs Billary, without also critiquing Slick Willy's term!! Yet Obama's tenure is such an extension of Dollar-Bill Clinton's tenure- that Bernie can ill afford to piss Obama off by 'telling too much truth'!!!

There're so many supposedly politically astute so-called 'progressives' [IMO really just 'liberals'] being so enthralled w 'Feeling the Bern'- apparently based on sentimental hype, instead of being tactical & strategical based on Core Interests & PRINCIPLES- IE claiming that: Bernie's talking about 'socialism' [NO He's NOT!]! - FYI: Bernie's on record for saying he's all about FDR 'New Deal' style Regulated Capitalism in combo w a social-security type safety-net!! Plus Bernie's dissed a real democratic-socialist the Late Hugo Chavez as a 'Dead Communist Dictator' [NOT!]! And Many 'Feeling the Bern' have falsely proclaimed he's the most 'progressive' POTUS candidate of recent times- Again NOT SO!! Dennis Kucinich, Jesse Jackson, Ralph Nader, Sis Dr Cynthia McKinney, Jill Stein & even Ron Paul were all more progressive than Bernie is re: being truly Anti-War, on Foreign Policy & the Military Industrial Intel Mass-Surveillance Security State!! And all except Ron Paul were arguable at-least as, If Not Even MORE So, progressive than Bernie is re: domestic policy!!

It's as if all those now 'Feeling the Bern' were only 10 - 12 yrs old just 8 yrs ago!!! Nothing I've out-lined here should be 'controversial' 'news' to anyone who was 30 & up in back 2008! [or even 18-20 & up for that matter]!

PS: Ta-Nehisi Coates does a follow-up piece at the Atlantic [@ www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/01/bernie-sanders-liberal-imagination/425022/ ] re: why he took Bernie to task for dissing the reparations issue as so-called 'divisive' [FYI: Bernie- any & every thing re: race is so-called 'divisive']. IMO It would not only have been principled, but even 'shrewd' & timely political strategy for Bernie to NOT have been so dismissive of the Reparations issue- especially if he wants distinguish himself from & compete w Billary for the Black vote! IMO he did NOT even need to make any firm commitments yet, beyond saying he's open to discussing it- both pro & con!

Even when Killary loses, her

Even when Killary loses, her ass wins.  From all reports, the Dimowits have some convoluted delegate system that had Killary getting more delegate votes in New Hampshire than Sanders despite her losing big there.  I don't know how accurate these numbers are but Clinton already has 394 delegates, both super and electorally assigned, to only 42 for Sanders.  So much for "democracy."

Sanders should do a "fuck it" strategy and go full steam in calling out the high crimes and misdemeanors of Bill, Kill, and Barry.  What the heck?  He's at the end of his congressional career; should be getting a nice pension (plus healthcare) based on his time there.  After Bill lamblasted him in a recent speech, along with the bullshit of this whole shampaign, he should go off like a Trump - but all his slams would be the truth unlike some of the Donald's "Trumpisms."  I'd guarantee he'd win a lot more support; maybe even wake up a few of the black Obama/Killary bots.  It would sure make for an entertaining campaign season.

Yet Another Point Those 'Feeling the Bern' Over-Look-

As you've clearly indicated Beverly, The FIX is in for Billary / Killary!!! In Iowa she allegedly 'wins' 6 straight coin tosses to squeak by Bernie for the 'win' there- then in NH he trouces her at the polls, yet she comes away w just as many Dim NH delegates as he does!! Yet those hyped on 'Feeling the Bern' seemingly forget that- 'It's the delegates that really count, stupid'!! & Kill-Bill clearly understands that!!

New Flash_Billary Wins NV, Jeb Bush Done After Being Trumpled

Over in NC:

Bernie's now "Leaving 'Lost Vegas' " for NC: Seems Bernie was competive re NV's Hispanic voters & may even edged Billary out for their vote -BUT- [unfortunately] NV Blacks went for Kill-Bill Clinton at over 3 to 1, which put her over the top! Showing Bernie's really got his work cut out for him in NC next week, where Blacks = 55% of NC's Dem voters! And IMO it does NOT help Bernie that Trump just won NC decisively, so NC Blacks will likely go w the Dim that they think has the best change vs Trumpocalypse in 2016's POTUS election, which would seem to be Billary!
