Ship Carrying Russian Fuel Heads to Cuba

Oil shipment to Cuba

Cuba is facing severe energy shortages as US sanctions restrict fuel imports. The Russian shipment now heading to the island will help a nation struggling to maintain vital services for its citizens.

The Sea Horse ship carrying Russian fuel is heading to Cuba amid the island’s energy situation and defying US President Donald Trump’s sanctions to impose tariffs, Bloomberg reported. According to the media outlet and data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler Ltd, the ship could be carrying about 200,000 barrels of Russian diesel fuel.

They reported that its arrival is scheduled for early March, according to Kpler’s chief oil analyst, Matt Smith.

For his part, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously stated that Russia is in contact with its Cuban partners regarding oil shipments to the island, amid the tightening of the US blockade.

“We have been in contact with our Cuban friends throughout this period and have been discussing options to help them,” Peskov confirmed.

In this context, Peskov told the Russian news agency TASS that Russia would not want an escalation of tension in relations with the United States over oil supplies to Cuba, but he noted that trade ties with Washington are now virtually non-existent.

Moscow is committed to engaging in constructive dialogue and resolving all issues related to the matter, he stressed.

“Cuba faces serious difficulties due to the US blockade. It is not just about fuel, but how these measures affect the daily lives of the population and the transport of essential supplies,” he said.

The US blockade “strangles” the country and its people and has a direct impact on healthcare for Cubans. “It is very bad when there is no fuel to deliver medicines or to transport patients urgently by air,” he said.
