The New York City police department keeps a list of 42,000 alleged gang members, and uses it to bring conspiracy charges that have resulted in mass arrests in Black and brown neighborhoods. “We don’t know how you get on the list, or how you can get off,” said Shannon Jones, co-founder of Why Accountability. Cops share the list with other agencies. “You may not know you’re on the list, but the NYPD may tell your child’s teacher that he’s on it,” she said.
