A New Cold War on China Is Against the Interests of Humanity

A New Cold War on China Is Against the Interests of Humanity
A New Cold War on China Is Against the Interests of Humanity

Ajamu Baraka and Margaret Kimberley join with the No to the New Cold War coalition to demand Donald Trump back off his confrontational stance with China.

In recent weeks, the U.S. has passed several laws, including the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, which violate China’s sovereignty. On July 3rd, the U.S. sent two naval aircraft carriers to the South China Sea. These moves bring the U.S. that much closer to a hot war with China by way of direct military escalations in the Asia Pacific.

None of this is new. Since 2013, the U.S. has “pivoted” its military toward China in an attempt to contain its rise. Over fifty percent of all U.S. military assets now reside in the Pacific. A global pandemic and a monumental collapse of the capitalist economy have greatly escalated the need for the Trump administration to fuel anti-China racism in the United States.

U.S. aggression toward China thus extends to the economic, political, and ideological realms. This writer is organizing with No to the New Cold War, a coalition of activists, intellectuals, and scholars committed to ending the U.S.’ New Cold War against China. On July 25th at 9 AM EST, we will be holding an online event to discuss how we can stop U.S. and Western aggression toward China in service of the vast majority of humanity. Margaret Kimberley and Ajamu Baraka from Black Agenda Report and the Black Alliance for Peace will be speakers at the event. To attend, please register for the event on Eventbrite here.

Statement

We note the increasingly aggressive statements and actions being taken by the US government in regard to China. These constitute a threat to world peace and are an obstacle to humanity successfully dealing with extremely serious common issues which confront it such as climate change, control of pandemics, racist discrimination and economic development.

We therefore believe that any New Cold War would run entirely counter to the interests of humanity. Instead we stand in favor of maximum global cooperation in order to tackle the enormous challenges we face as a species.

We therefore call upon the US to step back from this threat of a Cold War and also from other dangerous threats to world peace it is engaged in including: withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces agreement; withdrawal from the Paris Climate Change Accords; and its increasing disengagement from UN bodies. The US should also stop pressuring other countries to adopt such dangerous positions.

We support China and the US basing their relations on mutual dialogue and centering on the common issues which unite humanity.
