Free All Political, Elderly and Covid-Infected Prisoners, Say Mumia Supporters

Dr Johanna Fernandez and other advocates for Mumia Abu Jamal asked the city of Philadelphia to “stand with common humanity who face illness” and “bring our elderly population home, let them go.  They are sick, they have been held by an unjust system” – as is Abu Jamal, the nation’s best known political prisoner, who has contracted Covid-19. Dr. Fernandez said setting Mumia free is good medical practice, as well as justice.

When Movements Embrace Police Abolition, the Rich Resurrect “Reform”

“As soon as movements emerge that identify the normal operations of the police” and other capitalist institutions as the problem, the regime directs the language of the debate towards reform, said Dylan Rodriguez, professor of medica culture at the University of California at Riverside. “People are no longer tolerating anti-Black police terror,” said Rodriguez. To change the subject from police and prison abolition, the system’s defenders pretend the debate is centered on preservation of these institutions, through reform.

US is Enemy of Haitian Democracy

“The US is responsible for the complete destabilization of Haitian democracy and the complete loss of Haitian sovereignty,” said Dr Jemima Pierre, an anthropologist in the African American Studies Department at UCLA.  Speaking on Dr Jared Ball’s influential podcast “I Mix What I Like,” Dr Pierre said the US imposed president Jovenel Moise on the Haitian people, and materially supports his police, who have slaughtered dozens of protesters in the streets in recent weeks. Pierre is an activist with the Black Alliance for Peace.
