Black Agenda Radio · The Break NYC and the Need for a Socialist, Independent Mayoral Candidate in New York City

New York City residents will elect a mayor in November. But the democratic party primary process deprives voters of the opportunity to choose an independent, socialist candidate who would enact policies that thousands of people support. A new organization recently formed, The Break NYC, which is dedicated to finding and endorsing an independent leftist who is committed to staying in the race and appearing on the ballot. Two members of The Break NYC, Lance Hawkins and Gloria Mattera, will provide analysis.

Lance Hawkins is a community, labor, anti-war organizer, and a proud socialist born and raised in Harlem, New York. Lance has lectured at countless venues including Harvard University, Hunter College, Oberlin College, and University of Toronto.

Gloria Mattera is a long-time eco-socialist who is currently the co-chair of the Green Party of New York and on the interim steering committee of the Green Eco-Socialist Network. She has been involved in several independent left electoral initiatives and has run for office herself as a Green Party candidate. They both join us from New York City.
