Is This Really The Most Important Election Ever? If So, Then Where Are Our Issues?

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

It's hard to see how an election is so darn important for black America when the candidates aren't talking about the issues. Which one is the candidate that wants to roll back the prison state, or stop the drug war, or question gentrification? Is there a candidate who wants full funding of public education? A candidate who will cut off troops and military aid to Africa? If not, what are we voting for?

Is This Really The Most Important Election Ever? If So, Then Where Are Our Issues?

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

This is the most important election ever, black America is told every two and four years. That's probably true if one's own status and political legitimacy are on the line, and for the black political class that's really what this election is all about. It's about their legitimacy. It's about their perks and set-asides, their TV shows and the government grants to their ministries. It's about their careers, and those of their hangers on and aspirants.

This election is not about black unemployment, officially at 14%, actually double that, and in the inner cities of Atlanta, Chicago and like places closer to 50% of young men including ex-prisoners, because no Democrat running at any level proposes to address that. This election is not about black wealth, although the foreclosure epidemic drove the average black family's wealth down to a twentieth, as opposed to a tenth of that possessed by the average white family, because no Democrat running wants to talk about that either.

This election is not about black child poverty, which is the highest it's been since Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty nearly fifty years ago, and it's certainly not about rolling back the prison state or reconsidering the drug war because no Democrat wants to talk about any of that either.

This election is not about pursuing a binding climate change treaty, about reining in Big Oil and Big Energy, who are determined to keep on doing what they're doing despite the glaciers and icecaps from Tibet to Greenland, from the Andes to Alaska melting, despite advancing deserts, record storms every year and climate change that could threaten billions of lives worldwide. While Democrats on the stump will admit humans have begun to hideously alter the global climate, Democrats in power DO nothing to slow it down.

This most-important-ever election for black America is not about ending military aid to 53 out of 54 African countries (every one except Eritrea) or cutting off our proxy armies that have killed six million Congolese since 1996. It's not about ceasing to blow up Afghan and Somali and Yemeni and Pakistani children and bystanders into pink mist with robot drones, and it's certainly not about withdrawing our support for apartheid Israel. Our elected Democrats endorse those things just as heartily as Republicans.

This election is not about justice for immigrants. Republicans talk the meaner game, but Barack Obama actually deported more than a million people in his first three years, more than all recent Republicans combined. This election is not about halting the privatization of education, because Romney and Obama agree on that too.

It might be the most important election ever for the black political class, but it's not the least bit about beginning to halt the wave of gentrification that decimates black communities everywhere, or making a start at rolling back the prison state, granting full citizenship rights to and ending discrimination against former prisoners, or even ceasing the incarceration of juveniles with adults. It's not about ending or even slowing down the futile, hypocritical and racist war on drugs.

This election is not even about who will be on the US Supreme Court the next twenty years. The last time a defense lawyer made the Supreme Court was Thurgood Marshall. While on the Senate Judiciary Committee Senator Barack Obama declined to ask nominees Scalia or Roberts about their affiliation with the Federalist Society or query them on any of its radical beliefs like the “takings doctrine.” Obama's own nominees, while demographically correct, have moved the court rightward, not leftward in the opinion of many legal scholars.

The election is certainly not about punishing Wall Street for having crashed the economy, or keeping them from repeating their crime in the near future --- Republicans and Democrats alike agree that banksters deserve their bailout while homeowners, credit card debtors and student borrowers deserve to drown.

So for black people, where are our dogs in this race? Voting Republican is out of the question, that's like chickens lining up for Popeye's. If you believe that your vote IS your voice, voting for Democrats who murder civilians, who allow the banks to plunder the economy, who won't address unemployment and want to privatize education and everything in sight is a similar kind of volunteered slavery.

All the talk about “strategic voting” and “safe states” is, for black people, subtrefuge to justify the irrationality, the foolishness of casting your own vote against your own survival. If our votes are our voices, it's time to use those for our own good.

For my own part, I will be voting for Jill Stein, the Green Party's candidate, and Cheri Honkala. These are people unafraid to declare the drug war must be ended, and a WPA-style Green Jobs -Green New Deal program initiated, that we have to bring the troops home and cease supporting apartheid Israel. Stein and Honkala are white, of course. But their politics, by the measure of Martin Luther King at least, are blacker than Barack Obama's have ever been.

The object of present day black politics is preserving their perks and positions as “representatives” of the rest of us, while offering their services as black meat puppets for Wall Street, for privatizers, for Big Ag, Big Oil, Big Real Estate, military contractors and the rest.

The current black political class, and its array of candidates from the president down do not believe in social justice. There are big problems, but they fear big and truthful answers. They don't want to roll back the prison state. They just want to stick around awhile longer. They want to be on TV and collect honorariums. They don't know how to address joblessness or gentrification. That's your issue. They just know how to get paid.

"Voting?" No consenting to a Police State and Austerity

The Great Betrayal – and the Cynicism of Calling it a Grand Bargain

by William K. Black

Robert Kuttner has written much of the column I intended to write on this subject, so I will point you to his excellent column and add a few thoughts.

Kuttner wrote to warn that Obama intends to seek a "grand bargain" causing the U.S. to adopt the type of austerity program that threw the Eurozone back into a gratuitous recession.

Worse, Obama intends to begin to unravel the safety net (Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid) to convince the Republicans to enter into this Faustian bargain. Just as only a conservative Republican could visit "Red" China, only a Democrat can begin the destruction of the safety net. The difference, of course, is that normalizing relations with China was a good thing while unraveling the safety net is a terrible thing.

Five Easy Post-Election Predictions, No Matter Who Wins

Shamus Cooke

Thus, the Democrats and Republicans have the same “big picture” agenda that all working people should find abhorrent, since corporate gains will come at our expense. Once workers feel compelled to organize themselves to put up a fight, as the Chicago teachers did, all illusions in the Democrats will begin to fade, as people see with their own eyes the Democrats not only refusing to help them but actively opposing them, just as they did to the teachers in Chicago. Developments like this will allow a real movement to emerge that can challenge the two-party corporate dominated agenda. Until labor and community groups can unite on a widespread basis in independent action against the above bi-partisan agenda, we’ll be forever dragged into rooting for one of two candidates, neither of who have our basic interests in mind

EC:  In retrospect, I wish there were two mass actions, two choices people feed up with the duopoly had organized over a year ago.  Either vote for 3rd parties in huge, substantial numbers OR for busloads, trainloads of people to show up a polling places or fill stadiums with signs and placards stating they refuse to particpate in a rigged "democracy," to visibily show the America Pravda and the entire world that they refuse to give consent to the socio-paths and criminals in either party.

Prediction:  I gurantee you that, post-election, the mainstream media will not entertain a story that the reason the election was so close is because Obama disaffected his base by monstrous lies and betrayal or that people  chose to vote either 3rd party or not at all rather than participate in a fraud.

They'll talk about the "debates" and how Romney made a comeback, no substantive reasons.  If Obama wasn't a fucking facist he'd win in a landslide.  But that jig is way, way up.

I propose that people start organizing now for 2016, assuming we're alive and not in prison camps, to either vote 3rd party in massive numbers or engage in massive boycotts and not vote at all but to do it in a way that is VISIBLE to the world and the ruling class.  Enough already about the "Shining City on the Hill," China and Iran have more vibrant democracies than we do.  If we threaten to expose America's so-called moral authority to the world, it will staunch their hypocrite war-mongering and humanitarian gunslinging.

The motto for 2016 if we're not dead or in FEMA camps should be:  EXPOSE THE FRAUD we ain't voting unless its 3rd party!

My Problem w Bill Black's Indictment of Obama:

Black listed all these good reasons not to back Obama, but in a Real News interview / debate vis-a-vis BAR's own Glen Ford , he tell's Paul Jay & Bro Ford that ultimately progressives must vote for Obama [especially in so-called swing states] because RawMoney is so much worse.

Not much of a choice.  Obama

Not much of a choice.  Obama seems to have morphed into Bush..and Romeny has never met a drone he doesn't love.  Neither has any compuntion against invading another country while feeding the U. S. public lies.

Among other things since becoming president, Barack Obama has:

Signed the NDAA into law - making it legal to assassinate Americans w/o charge or trial.

Initiated, and personally oversees a 'Secret Kill List'.

Waged war on Libya without congressional approval.

Started a covert, drone war in Yemen.

Escalated the proxy war in Somalia.

Escalated the CIA drone war in Pakistan.

Maintained a presence in Iraq even after "ending" the war.

Sharply escalated the war in Afghanistan.

Secretly deployed US special forces to 75 countries.

Sold $30 billion of weapons to the dictatorship in Saudi Arabia.

Signed an agreement for 7 military bases in Colombia.

Opened a military base in Chile.

Touted nuclear power, even after the disaster in Japan.

Opened up deepwater oil drilling, even after the BP disaster.

Did a TV commercial promoting "clean coal".

Defended body scans and pat-downs at airports.

Signed the Patriot Act extension into law.

Deported a modern-record 1.5 million immigrants.

Continued Bush's rendition program.

Friendly Amendment

Is about to kick start a war between Libya and Mali

Engaged in covert operations to destabalize Latin America and reinvigorate Right Wing death squads and quash labor movements

Sanctioned a coup in Paraguay

Working to overthrow Venezuela's democratically elected government

Sanctions the war on drugs in Mexico that has resulted in 10s of thousands of deaths

Installed missle batteries in Poland aimed at Russia

Continues the failed war in Afghanistan (who was it that said: "I'm not against wars, just dumb wars" ahhh... duh)

Has generally destabilized the Middle East and the world

Sanctioned FISA and Telcom spying

Refused to prosecute Wall St. thieves, not one

Refused to appoint Elizabeth Warren to key financial watchdog post

Refused to prosecute criminals in Bush administration

To add insult to injury kept many Bushies in key positions in his administration.  David Betrayus and Wm. Gates to name a few

(How many U.S. Attorneys/Bush appointees did he hold over???)

The banks that were "too big to fail" are now even BIGGER

Gave these bastard/zombie banks carte blanche to not lend to ave. Americans and charge us even more fees

Thwarted mortgage relief for average Americans prefering a failed policy of allowing large investors to buy foreclosed properties and rent them

promotes Quantatative Easing which is a continued wealth transfer to large banks at taxpayer expense

According to audit of Federal Reserve, transferred more taxpayer dollars to large US AND foreign banks and corporations

Didn't say shit when his boy Rahm attempted to destroy teacher's unions

Race to the Top is a not so veiled attempt to gut public education and teachers unions and promote private charter schools

and last but certainly not least, refuses to use allow the words: Black, poor and urban to roll off his lying lips... hell even Jack Kemp (GOP) had an urban strategy

But, but, spite of it all.. remember... "He's heaven sent!"  AND....he has Jay Z on his Ipod and loves basketball, the last 2 things makes him "Black"  don't ya know??? LOL

Oh, I almost forgot his AFRICOM policy shows how much he loves Black folks, excuse me...

RE Laitin America & the Carib: Don't Forget Honduras & Haiti

Here's My 2 Cents Worth:

Obama & Billary backed a coup against Honduras' duely elected Pres Zelaya while they pretended otherwise.

RE Haiti Obama & Billary maintained Bush Sr/Jr's & Slick Willie's policy of suffering Haiti by opposing Pres Aristide return, even after the 2010 quake, while imposing Neo-Duvalierist {not so sweet}Mickey Martelly on Haiti. Compared to Obama & Billary [& Napoleon Complex Sarkozy] allowing Baby Doc to just waltz back into Haiti without a care, as they suppressed Aristide's & the Haitian People's Lavalas party. And then in the wake of the Haitian quake, Obama ordered an invasion of Haiti disguised as a so-called 'humanitarian relief' effort.

Here, on this pre-election video, you'll see Skousen and Jones instruct you on how to shoot looter's (Black people) and survive on your own, when (or if) Romney overthrows the federal government:

Solar, wind, and geothermal etc. is not enough to cover the people's energy and employment needs. Obama has already subsidized green jobs and it fails. We need the all inclusive WPA that we already know works.

According to the reactionaries, Obama already has a covert green deindustrialization policy:

Joel: Well I follow my own advice. I moved to Utah!

The Zionist Mormon - Joel- believes that Americans want Russia and China to attack the American federal government with nukes. Is it a self fulfilling (White Horse) prophecy? Does he really secretly want this to happen?

Must see TV

I found this tonight and it MUST be shared with as many people as you can.  It's a C-Span interview of a REAL Constitutional Law Professor Jonathan Turley.  What is significant is that C-Span allows callers from GOP, Dem, and Independent camps to call in and make comments or raise questions.  So this isn't a partisan discussion.

Check it out.... its incredible.

The killer line is when Turley says--in response to a caller who wants to place the blame on the Republicans-is that WE ARE A NATION OF CHUMPS who have bought into the chimera of Red State/Blue State paradigm.

There are a few true patriots left in this country.  What's significant is that Turley, in response to a caller's question, "what can we do" says w/o hesitation we need to think about voting for a third party w/o naming names.

God bless you Mr. Turley.

Watch.... it will blow you away.

Nation of chumps? Or nation of ignorant people?

Don't you want the democratic party to split, or collapse?

If we survive a Romney administration, the democrats will have preserved themselves by posing as our defenders against Romney's policies.

The only way people will learn is if they continue to hit rock bottom under fake, populist Democratic rule.

Postpone fascism: Vote Obama! (If you're in a swing state)

If you don't like Obama and you're in a blue or red state it's a complete waste of time voting at all. Too many ignorant, or complacent people to overthrow the status quo candidate in those states.

War Lords and psychopaths

Thanks Bruce for telling the Truth.  It is not about the issues that were so clearly described in the article.  It is about who will be the War Lord to reside over the dying corpse we call Amerikkka.  It is about the continued dismantling of the economy/education/safety net, the continued expansion of the prison industrial complex/school to prison pipeline/global war on us (African and other people of color) by the psychopaths from the CIA/Homeland Security to Monsanto to Wall Street.

All this yammering about issues is just the sauce for all of our gooses that will be cooked/roasted by these jackasses (if we don’t stop believing the BullSh*t they keep slinging at us).  One thing is clear the people’s concerns don’t mean jack sh*t to these lunatics.  No matter who gets to be War Lord in Charge the rape pillage and plunder by the psychopaths will continue unabated.  They are on a mission to Loot Shoot and Kill Rob and Steal as much as they can here and everywhere else in the world (I thought we knew)!!!

ELECTIONS, What ELECTIONS???? with all the voter purging, voter caging and voter ID laws; all the vote hacking, vote flipping/switching and vote disappearing how the hell can we even clam that this is a REAL election (Oh No You Didn’t)!!!  Yes I Did, Whoever it is that wins or should I say steals or high jacks this cavalcade of vote trick-a-ration, the parade of psychopath muggery and thuggery will go on (Big Ballin and Shot Callin)!!!  And unless we the people wake the hell up and smell the BullSh*t we will continue to be pushed into the black hole of subjugation.

LOL Please help Us All

R. I. P. American Democracy

By Ernest Partridge
Co-Editor, "The Crisis Papers."

February 1, 2005

This “election” is not a contest, it is a charade.

I am not certain who will win the Presidential election. But of this much, I am quite convinced: the winner will be the candidate preferred by the “oligarchy” – the one-percent of the one-percent who effectively own the Congress, the Courts, the Media, half of the nation’s private wealth, and the machines and software that counts and compiles the votes. This apparently means that Mitt Romney will be the next President, for he is one of the oligarchs.

The preference of the American voters is quite irrelevant, as it has been in the past three elections.

Keep on reading....I refuse to participate in this farce anymore.

Among other things since becoming president, Barack Obama has:

Signed the NDAA into law - making it legal to assassinate Americans w/o charge or trial.

Initiated, and personally oversees a 'Secret Kill List'.

Waged war on Libya without congressional approval.

@ S Murph Elections? What elections???

I concur with you totally.

Here's the psychopathic irony of it all.

The same racist, cynical vote suppressors who crow about being part of the Greatest Democracy on Earth, who have the audacity and hubris to complain about voter fraud in Iran and elsewhere across the globe, double down when it comes to suppressing democracy in the United States through their myriad voter suppression tactics.  What a joke this country is.  What a bunch of mendacious hypocrites and thugs.

Then, to add insult to injury, the Sec. of the State of Iowa and one more state I can't name right now, are threatening to prosecute International Vote Observers who come w/n a certain distance of polling stations.  They don't want the world to watch the US charade.

Perhaps we need to start formulating a new strategy, perhaps we need to encourage the State's Rightists, perhaps we need to embrace the cold stark reality that people of color are not welcome to the American version of democracy, perhaps we need to embrace the fact that we don't WANT to be a part of it...and use the rights of states to create our own communties and world.

Perhaps we need to heed the words of Rahm Emanuel, citizen of Israel, and take advantage of a crisis.  There are opportunities in this crisis, how we acknowledge, accept and deal with it are key.  My ethos is: "I seek power by my ability to define reality."

I realize I'm engaging in wishful thinking however.  98% of Blacks are wedded to their Black President delusion, and 90% of White Liberals are wedded to either their "lesser evil" delusion, and/or their moral relatavism which informs them that as long at its their team doing the evil it's okay.

I don't see this fraud and charade continuing much longer, there is a force in the universe called truth and there's karma too.

So increasingly I'm resigning myself to live in my small, controllable patch of the universe and not fret a bit as shit collapses around me.

Broken US System Needs Watching: International Election Observers Could Face Arrest

by Dave Lindorff

It is ironic that the US, which has been dispatching its military to invade far-flung countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, claims to be “bringing democracy” to their people, while at home one of its two main political parties is openly trying to prevent millions of Americans from exercising the basic right to vote. Ironic too that the US government, through the so-called National Endowment for Democracy, sends funds to other countries allegedly to help encourage democracy (a dubious claim, to be sure, as it generally funds opposition groups that have been linked to coup attempts as in Venezuela).

Most ironic of all, of course, the US itself regularly sends election monitors under OSCE auspices to countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Venezuela and other states to monitor the fairness of their elections, but when it comes to monitoring elections at home, it threatens other countries’ monitors with arrest and jail for trying to do the same thing.

Even the conservative magazine National Review acknowledges that foreign monitors are justified. As the magazine’s national columnist John Fund notes, “Representative Mack claims that election monitoring ‘should be reserved for third-world countries, banana republics, and fledging democracies.’ Well, no. The 2000 Bush v. Gore Supreme Court case exposed to the rest of the world the fact that Florida and some other U.S. states have sloppy election systems that are far less advanced than, say, countries such as Mexico.”

Dixon Tells Blacks to Vote For Zionism

What a joke BAR has become.  Obama, Romney and Jill Stein all support Jewish supremacy aka Zionism.  The difference with Stein however is that she is Jewish and directly benefit from Jewish Supremacy.  This Left failed to rally behind Cynthia McKinney in 2008 and Ralph Nader in 2004 because they resisted and stood up to Jewish Power.

This year with the complete Jewish takeover of the Greens, Dixon advises Blacks to support a supremacist covering her avow to Judaism while labeling her as "white".  Since we know that Jewry hates White people labeling them as such only misleads and misguides Black people to vote AGAINST their interests.  In that case Blacks might as well vote for Obama.

Cynthia McKinney's defense of Libya is what put her on the wrong side of the Zio-Greens and why she was not supported by the Left.  The Left was extremely vocal for the distruction of the Libyan Jamahiriya which was a tremendous slap in the face of ALL BLACK PEOPLE.  It really pathetic that Dixon would then support the Jewish candidate in light of Jewry's long desire -- since 1982 -- to see Libya distroyed.

Dixon position is no different than the same kind of MISLEADERSHIP they rail about.  Perhaps BAR should take a look in the mirror and the reflection they will see is that of a sellout to Jewish power.

It's over ....

The fact is, American voters are too damn ignorant and stupid to ever vote intelligently.

Nine out of ten Black-American voters are too stupid to find their genitals; seven or eight out of ten White-Americans are too stupid to find their genitals.

And things to get any better with the others.

Last sleazy company I worked at during the 2008 election, all the Black-American workers didn't think Obama would win the election 'cause they thought he was a Muslim.  After he won, they were ecstatic that the first Muslim-American became president!

That's the level this country's populace exists at today.

Dumb, dumb and dumber --- since only about two actual progressive shows exist today (Bonnie Faulkner's "Guns & Butter" show out of KPFA in Berkeley and -- everyone receives their propaganda feed from FoxFiction, CNN, NPR, ABC, CBS, etc. --- this country is over.

@sgt._doom AMEN, it's all over but the crying

You are correct my friend... it's over.  The end of democracy in America and hopefully the end of Amerikkan hegemony and Amerikkan Exceptionalism is near.

Nothing exceptional about this cess pool of a country. And I could care less about its future.  It doesn't merit a future.

I was watching the Travel Channel today, No Resevervations with Anthony Bourdain, he was in Cuba (among other episodes).

I'd rather be in Cuba than this shithold of a country.  In Cuba values are 10X more authentic.  I've said to peers and young people a million times:  If there is a global economy than why are you wedded to the U S of A?  The leaders, corporate and political, in this country are not wedded to the US of A, so why should I be???

I'm watching 60 Minutes right now as they try to do their horseshit version of examining what's wrong with the system.  Nothing but a tired propaganda exercise.  There is some historian there crowing about Geo. Washington being the greatest president and the honesty of Harry Truman.

What has CBS done for truth and honesty?  Not a damn thing.

Truth is I'm not alone... increasingly more and more of us--the INTELLIGENT ONES--realize that there is a saner better world out there and we are not afraid to explore it.

The dumbest assholes in the world comprise 95 % of this country... I could give a shit about this countries survival, in fact it's death will be a boom to world peace.

The problem is that most Americans buy into some distorted religious/patriotic horseshit about where they die and are buried.  If you are truly spiritual.. where you are buried is immaterial.

Cuba is 10X better than America.  The irony is that the U.S. embargo has actually been somewhat of a blessing because its denied access to the sloven, perverted U.S. culture and has made Cuba become a sustainable country.  Is it perfect?  No, but way more perfect than this perversion of a democracy. Crime is low, health care and education is high.  The people are overwhelmingly happy and sane.  I would love to emigrate there and let this shithole hit rock bottom as it surely will.

Good luck to Mr. Dixon and Green Party of GA today

All that hard work will have results.  Based on a few comments, I'd like to paraphrase Kermit the frog: "It isn't (always) easy being Green" in some online venues.  And the nonfiction history Constantine's Sword by James Carroll, 2001 lays out the historical roots of the bile in easy to read, "page turner" book.

Spank the Donkey

Steve Perry:

Time to give up on the Democratic party once and for all. How much longer can we listen to all the plaintive, futile pleadings to "change the system from within," to make the party wake up and smell the electorate? This is a wish, not a strategy; it hasn't come true and it won't. That so many people do still cling to the Democrats is testament to the power of a myth--several myths, actually, but the one I have in mind is the fiction that the Democratic party turned right because the country turned right. Any good propagandist knows the most important lie is the big lie that frames all the others, and this is the Democrats' big lie. Doesn't anyone remember all the pundit-prattle about Ronald Reagan's "popularity gap," the gaping disconnect between his personal popularity and that of his policies? Since the mid-1980s there has been a steady dribble of social issues polls that have shown the American public standing considerably to the left of its elected officials. (There are polls that prove the converse, too; usually they are the ones that lard their queries with one overriding presumption: You don't want to pay higher taxes, do you?)

However you parse the polls, there was never any popular mandate for the Democrats' right turn. If there had been, we would not see so many defections from an increasingly conservative Democratic party; we would not hear so much half-hearted apologia from beleaguered Democrats waiting vainly for the day when the party veers the other way again; and there would not be such a gigantic mass of people reduced to thinking of Democrats as the perennial "lesser evil"--that is to say, not what we the people want or need, but a little better than nothing. I am going to argue that the Democrats are not really a lesser evil, that their turn to Republican Lite in the past generation has been as cynical as it is deliberate. But for the moment let's take the lesser evil argument at face value and suppose that the courts and the human services bureaucracies do fare a little better (that is, erode more slowly) under Democrats. Is that "democracy" in any sense? Do you really think so little of your country and your citizenship as to accept that?

What happened to the Democratic party?

You could say that times changed and the party changed with them, and you would be right so far as it goes. But it had nothing to do with the sentiments of the people. The party's right turn was a move conceived from within and designed to make the Democrats a more appealing vehicle for major private and corporate donors. This past election notwithstanding, the strategy has been an enormous success. Cash receipts have grown mightily. The business wing of the party has generated a president who became the first Democrat since FDR to win re-election to the White House, and missed electing his successor by a handful of votes (one vote, really, in the Supreme Court). The business Democrats' hold on the national party apparatus is complete

More Quotes From Above Article For All who Wet Dream RE Al Gore

as POTUS - Continuing on from Steve Perry's 2002 Article 'Spank the Donkey':

} The DLC, was hatched in the mid-1980s, promoted mainly by conservative Southern & Western Democrats- IE: Bruce Babbitt, Charles Robb, Al Gore, Sam Nunn, and the winsome young governor from Arkansas [IE: the DLC were / are the new Dixie-crats]. To anyone paying attention, it was immediately clear what they were up to. In 1986 Thomas Ferguson & Joel Rogers published a little-noted book called Right Turn: The Decline of the Democrats and the Future of American Politics that traced the rise of the business Democrats who would eventually constitute the heart of party leadership.

The coterie of big Democratic fundraisers eventually coalesced behind the banner of the DLC, whose control of the party was ratified by the successes of Bill Clinton. DLC chieftains defined the game of politics entirely in terms of money and set out to raise as much as possible, amending the party platform as necessary and taking care to distance themselves from all their old constituencies--most conspicuously, Black people, but more broadly all of the working class. Their few gestures toward the white working class lay mainly in the realm of race-baiting (it was Al Gore who first dug up Willie Horton to use against Michael Dukakis, in the 1988 New York primary) and no-new-tax pledges.

The rise of the DLC is why the people who protested that Jesse Jackson had no legitimate shot in 1988 were ultimately right.

What the DLC practiced wasn't centrism. It always leaned carefully but emphatically to the right. Bill Clinton set the tone for his administration by provoking a public fight with a relatively obscure female rapper [Sis Soulja] in order to distance himself and the party from the great mass of Black America, a gesture he spent the next 8 years underscoring with all kinds of coded talk about poverty, pathology, and responsibility. (This was a winning proposition on more than one level: A lot of upwardly mobile blacks loved him for it. {sounds like Obama's ilk) [FYI: Slick Willie also made a point of publically stiff-arming Jesse to appease the Good Ole Boy / Dixie-crat / Reagan type Dims. Yet many Blacks called Slick Willie the '1st Black Pres' till Billary race-baited Obama in 2008.]

What was  Clinton / Gore's strategy from the day chief adviser Dick Morris whispered the magic word in Bill's ear? "Triangulation," evoked a world of cynicism and duplicity; Morris's basic idea was to hew close to Republicans on policy (to please the party's funders and to avoid getting outflanked on the right with voters) while standing nominally to their left. The meager differences between the Clintonites and the Republicans were carefully amplified in Clinton's public rhetoric. This meant assiduous attention to PR hype ('I feel your pain'and precious little elseThe Morris/Clinton stratagem was predicated on the notion that Democratic voters had nowhere else to go and only required the barest of scraps to keep them in the fold.

The Clinton years saw unprecedented rollbacks in  Environmental protections. Clinton/Gore tipped the scales more decisively than ever toward the preferences of business. Jeffrey St. Clair, the co-editor of Counterpunch and a veteran environmental writer and activist states, "Reviewing the environment during Clinton time is like watching a preview of the Bush Jr administration. Indeed, many of Bush Jr's worst ideas for the planet germinated with Clinton. It started early and didn't let up. At the behest of his friends in the chemical industry, Clinton moved to excise the Delaney Clause, a valuable law that set zero tolerance for the presence of known carcinogens in processed foods. With Delaney gone, the chemical industry had smooth sailing for the approval of a host of new pesticides. This also set a bad precedent for other issues: Regulative prohibitions were going to be shoved aside in favor of 'risk assessments' and cost-benefit analysis. This approach was soon applied to air pollution, water pollution and toxic waste. But it saw its most malign and far-reaching application with the Endangered Species Act, which was essentially eviscerated under the guidance of Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. [FYI: It was on Slick Willie's watch that Mosanto was allowed to introduce GMOs into the environment]

"Midway through Clinton's first term, he signed what has been called the 'worst environmental law of the 20th century'--the Salvage Logging Rider, which allowed timber to be clear-cut on national forests across the country without compliance with any environmental laws and shielded from any kind of citizen challenge or lawsuits. In a 1996 op-ed the great environmental radical David Brower wrote that 'Clinton and Gore have done more harm to the environment in 4 years than Reagan and Bush Sr did in 12.' And the late Jay Hair, former head of the National Wildlife Federation- compared the experience of working with Clinton/Gore to date rape."

Clinton's crowning achievement was welfare reform. It was his most famous "compromise" with the evil Republicans, and you miss his real genius if you suppose it was any compromise at all. It's a bald lie to say that Clinton's hand was forced by political exigency; he had plenty of room to maneuver. Democrats would have you believe that Clinton's legacy was a matter of doing his best under adverse circumstances. Actually he built exactly the record he desired, give or take his planned 2nd-term overhaul of  Social Security. (Thanks Monica- you saved Social Security!) Next to Clinton's, Nixon's administration was one long orgy of fuzzy-headed liberalism.

Al Gore's latest reinvention, this time as the avatar of a single-payer national health care system [& Global-Warming Guru- FYI: Gore went MIA on single-payer in 2009 - 10 when Obama took it off the table], is a similarly cynical affair. Surely you remember Gore the environmentalist, author of a bold and even apocalyptic treatise on global warming; his green awakening didn't stop Gore and his merry band from brokering the many environmental betrayals of the Clinton years. Gore was not interested in environmental reforms, even the petty ones he could have won in the near term. When Carol Browner, Al's own former chief of staff, tried to push through some modestly tightened EPA smog regulations in 1998, big Democratic contributors balked and the administration hung her out to dry... {

First of all the Dims have NEVER been a progressive party- at best they've been a mildly liberal centrist party under FDR, JFK, & Carter. The Dims came to national prominence w the election of Slave-owning / Injun Killin Andrew Jackson as POTUS, & had mainly been a Dixie-crat party at-least up till the advent of FDR [IE: over 100yrs]. That's why Blacks faithfully voted GOP / Party of Lincoln from 1868 till 1932 [IE: the rise of FDR]. And Dixie-crats had as much if not more influence in the Dim party till LBJ's presidency [himself a Dixie-crat],  w changed [breifly] w Tricky Dick's Southern Strategy of attracting Dixie-Crats to the Repugs.

But then came the new Big BIZ friendly Dixie-crats IE: Slick Willie, Al Gore, Bruce Babbit, Sam Nunn- under the banner of the DLC. So as this article's author, Steve Perry, showed 10yrs ago- all this talk about returning the Dims to their imagined so-called 'progressive' roots is just delusional -or- MisInfo / DisInfo.

It's simply "An Inconvenient Truth" Isn't it???

The fact of the matter as you state,is that there are no Progressive Democrats, hell I'm beginnng to think there are little to no Progressive individuals period.  Cenk lays it out plain and simple for anyone who cares to read, to anyone with half a brain.  It's about the most meaningless drivel I've read, but give him credit for his honesty.  He's at least explaining how Obama and the Media lied to the public.  He's rationalizing Obama's cynicism and if you read some of the readers's comments you will see they rationalize it too.

Not much hope for Amerika.  It's all about whose team wins even when its the Oligarchy winning.  There are no principles anymore, never were.  Just like the Media and Hollywood turned Al Gore into a Prog and a "seer" when the reality is that he was a whore for the environmental polluters... and no doubt still is.

Funny how he was front and center promoting himself and his so-called enviromental causes when Bush II was in office and now he's quiet as a church mouse.  Anyone who gives their consent to this process is nothing but a frog in boiling water.

Watch Roland Martin, Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al give Obama cover when he strikes his Grand Bargain.

Why Obama Will Disappoint Progressives and I Voted for Him Anyway

by Cenk Uygur

Anyone who thinks President Obama will magically turn around in his second term and be a real progressive is high on a 2008 supply. Soon after President Obama is re-elected he will do the Grand Bargain deal with Republicans, which will cut Medicare, Medicaid, discretionary spending and maybe even Social Security. On top of that, they will pretend to get extra revenue from closing loopholes but in reality they will definitely do a corporate tax cut and perhaps even a top rate tax cut for the rich.

President Obama views this as the height of courage because conventional wisdom in Washington is that screwing over your own constituents is very, very bold. Yes, not laying a glove on the rich and powerful while you take the lion's share from the middle class, poor and powerless is so bold! And if it's so courageous why don't both sides tell us that's what they're going to do before the election? And yes, this time the Republicans will take the deal because it actually helps their donors a tremendous amount.

President Obama will also continue senseless signature strikes where we have no idea who we're killing with our drones. He will also continue warrantless wiretapping and indefinite detentions. He will pass every trade deal multi-national corporations demand, he will continue to break records in oil drilling and approve the northern half of the Keystone XL pipeline.

And oh yeah, he will continue to do almost nothing on the biggest problem in the country - the enormously corrupting influence of money in politics. The man who raised a billion dollars in legalized bribes in this election will not magically become a reformer in his next term. The only way he goes in that direction is if we push him. The only hope we have is that he is a politician and might change with the times if world events force him to.

So, I am under no delusion that I will be getting change or hope or a progressive. I will be getting a non-radical Republican. So, why vote for him? It's as simple as this - we have no other choice. It is amazing to me that anyone would ever consider voting for Mitt Romney.

Is it really the Most important election ever

I am afraid I must agree somewhat with Deadbeat about the Green Party.  What happened to Cynthia Mckinney and and Rosa Clemente.  I know Rosa Clemente was a  powerful voice against the State of Israel.  And now we have a Jewish Presidential Candidate.  And no, I am not afraid of the label "Anti Semitism".     I want to know what role is Rosa Clemente  playing in the Green Party at this time.  I would like to have seen Rosa as the Green Party Candidate for President.  She had the fire and Politics as  far as I am concerned.  Also, what exactly are the issues the Green Party supports that speaks directly to the depression black people are facing at this time, because I don't see them.  My vote is for "NONE OF THE ABOVE,  although we don't have that option on the ballot.

This is not necessarily an indictment of the Green Party or Dixon's preferences.  It is a question I have, because I don't see any of the candidats including the Green Party representing my interest as a black man

Jill Stein

The Green Party platform

Abandoning free trade agreements and enacting a full employment program will greatly aid Blacks, who suffer a disproportionately high unemploymnet rate.

The Greens also support equal pay for equal work without any discrimination based on race or gender, tuition free education from kindergarten through college and a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions.

The Green platform also calls for statehood for Washington D.C. and, measures to end the prison industrial complex, which disproportionately imprisons blacks.

I suppose McKinney and Clemente were busy and didn't run for the Green party nominations this year. I voted for them in 2008. Stein and Honkala both seem like good candidates. I don't see what difference Stein being Jewish makes. Winona Laduke the 2000 Green Party Vice Presidential candidate had a Jewish mother.
