Freedom Rider: Obama’s War in Libya
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
The continuity between the Bush and Obama administration’s is now complete. Almost exactly eight years after Bush invaded Iraq, Obama’s Euro-American military alliance swooped down on Libya to enforce a western world order. “Obama definitely took a page out of the Bush administration recipe book,” including “peddling scary stories of poison gas stockpiled at a remote desert location.” All this may serve Obama well in domestic opinion polls, since “American blood lust is always just below the surface.”
Freedom Rider: Obama’s War in Libya
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
“The United States is in the beginning of a full-fledged intervention and plan to carve up Libya and take its oil.”
Operation Odyssey Dawn sounds like the title of a bad novel or an action movie. It is actually the name given to a plan to kill many people and partition their county for the use of others. Congratulations to Barack Obama. He now has a war to call his own and rhetorical flourish to go along with it. No longer is he a mere poseur, forced to justify his murderous action by saying that he inherited “dumb wars” from George W. Bush. Now it is official. Obama is a true American president, killing people at will under the pretext of saving them from an oppressive dictator, in this case Muammar Gaddafi.
The lie of the much vaunted “no fly zone” was made clear almost immediately. “No fly” sounds so antiseptic, so safe. The mean, villainous dictator Gaddafi wouldn’t be allowed to fly his planes where he wanted. No harm, no foul.
The term “no fly” was used to help make the case to not very well informed yet still skittish Americans, but the words don’t fool anyone that is paying attention. The United States is in the beginning of a full-fledged intervention and plan to carve up Libya and take its oil, and that doesn’t sound very nice at all.
No fly zones are easy to sell, especially if the Arab League says it is all just fine. Of course, it is now a bit inconvenient when the same group publicly says the indiscriminate killing is not exactly what they had in mind. "What happened differs from the no-fly zone objectives. What we want is civilians' protection not shelling more civilians."
“Nothing makes the approval rating soar for a president like a good dose of death and destruction meted out against some swarthy foreigners.”
It isn’t clear what caused such naiveté on the part of the League of Arab States. They should have known better than to give the United States carte blanche to use its military might.
The Nobel peace prize winning American president will, like his predecessors before him, get unqualified support from his people precisely because he is killing people and claiming it is all for their own good. Nothing makes the approval rating soar for a president like a good dose of death and destruction meted out against some swarthy foreigners in a far away place.
Of course, Gaddafi will likely emerge with greater popularity now that the United States is killing his people. There is nothing like an attack from a foreign power to give any leader credibility and support. The Arab nationalism which has so recently re-emerged is thanks to the United States, now stronger than ever and hostile to the U.S., all because of our government’s actions.
Obama definitely took a page out of the Bush administration recipe book. First we start with an evil dictator. (Said dictator may have been a United States ally but no one will mention that anymore.) Next, add hysterical warnings of imminent terror attacks from the evil-doer.
“United States allies in Bahrain and Yemen kill their citizens without fear of American reprisal.”
The administration had already begun peddling scary stories of poison gas stock piled at a remote desert location. “In recent weeks, as U.S. and European militaries prepared to intervene in Libya, Western reconnaissance satellites have been focused on a small garage at a remote site in the Libyan desert. In the garage, south of the city of Sirte, the Libyan government keeps about 10 tons of mustard gas in about a half-dozen large canisters. If he chose to do so — and could determine how — Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi could use the caustic chemical to kill large numbers of his people.”
Barack Obama should just go ahead and hire Colin Powell to do a reprise of his mobile chemical weapons labs story, this time with photos of a garage in the Libyan desert instead of the Iraqi desert.
Meanwhile, United States allies in Bahrain and Yemen kill their citizens without fear of American reprisal. The hypocrisy is breathtakingly transparent and ought to immediately discredit Obama and his European partners in crime. Unfortunately it will do no such thing. Obama and Sarkozy and Cameron will survive and never pay a price for their criminality.
Obama won’t pay a price domestically either. Democrats will repeat their behavior of clinging desperately to one of their own, no matter what he does. American blood lust is always just below the surface, and scenes of missiles creating havoc and terror always gain a president greater popular support. So it goes, this time with a peace prize laureate.
Violence is as American as apple pie, and is loved just as much.

Arab League Vote
The Arab league vote can be explained by the fact that only 11 of the 22 Arab League members even attended the meeting that endorsed the intervention and out of the 11, Algeria and Syria opposed any military intervention.

To be fair to Democrats, a number of them such as Dennis Kucinich, Maxine Waters and Barbara Lee have expressed strong opposition to the new war and Kucinich said that it could be an impeachable offense. http://www.truth-out.org/congress-must-debate-libya-war68643
I also think that you are being too hard on the American people. Americans already oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their is little support for starting another war. Their is at best barely a majority of Americans who support the new war. Americans are pretty war weary and are skeptical about a third war andObama will have a tough time gaining widespread public support for the intervention in LIbya. http://www.sfexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/2011/03/does-public-approve-libya-war-it-depends
Americans are growing more opposed to military adventures abroad.
I agree. I am Australian but
I agree. I am Australian but have many American friends who completely disagree with all the wars. They say Obama has no business in Libya and this is purely a capitalistic venture.

Why France Was So Keen to Attack Libya
by Soeren Kern
The survey gives Le Pen 23%, two percentage points ahead of both Sarkozy and Socialist leader Martine Aubry. On the basis of this opinion poll, Le Pen would automatically qualify for the second round run-off with one or other of the two mainstream party leaders.
Le Pen, who appeals to middle class voters, is riding high on voter dissatisfaction with the failure of the mainstream parties to address the problem of Muslim immigration. Since taking her post three months ago, Le Pen has single-handedly catapulted the twin issues of Muslim immigration and French national identity to the top of the French political agenda. In recent weeks, Le Pen has been a permanent fixture on prime-time television to discuss the threat to France of a wave of immigrants from Libya.
Gaddafi has already pledged that Europe will be "invaded" by an army of African immigrants: "You will have immigration. Thousands of people from Libya will invade Europe. There will be no-one to stop them any more," he warned on March 6 in an interview with the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche.
During a visit to Italy in August 2010, Gaddafi demanded €5 billion a year from the European Union to stop illegal immigration which "threatens to turn Europe black." At the time, Gaddafi asked: "What will be the reaction of the white Christian Europeans to this mass of hungry, uneducated Africans? We don't know if Europe will remain an advanced and cohesive continent or if it will be destroyed by this barbarian invasion. We have to imagine that this could happen, but before it does we need to work together."
Furious Europeans have compared Gaddafi's demands for cash to stop illegal immigration to a "Mafia extortion racket." But since the revolt in Tunisia in January, nearly 15,000 boat people (more than the total for all of 2010) have arrived on the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, a 20-square-kilometer island that traditionally has been a major gateway for illegal immigration into the European Union.
On March 14, Le Pen upstaged Sarkozy by visiting Lampedusa and telling undocumented migrants on the island that they were not welcome in Europe. "I have a lot of compassion for you, but Europe cannot welcome you," Le Pen said. "We do not have the financial means."
On March 2, the French minister for European affairs, Laurent Wauquiez, warned that up to 300,000 illegal immigrants could arrive in the European Union from North Africa during 2011. The influx of immigrants from Libya is a "real risk for Europe that must not be underestimated," he said.
Threatened by Le Pen's rising popularity, and in urgent need of a political boost, Sarkozy is now using the Libya intervention both to play the role of the respected statesman on the international stage and to address French concerns over mass immigration from North Africa.
How do you like dem apples folks? The "Black" President is helping White Europe keep the Black Africans from mixing with their gene pool. He's helping Europe to keep the Niggas in check. What the hell, he's doing such a good job of that in America, why not spread his largesse to Europe?
"Change you Can believe in." Hilarious. Told you suckers the job of the US Prez. has been AND ALWAYS WILL BE the maintenance of White Supremacy. "He's the Black President, even though he can't be Black, he has to be the President for everybody?"
Some of yall need to go back to last week's BAR edition and re-read the essay: "Does the Black President Owe Anything to the Black Community?" Keep asking that question, in the meantime "the Black President" is more than happy to provide the answers, there in "black and white" for all to see. LOL
(psst... I wonder if a Jewish President would owe anything to the Jewish Community, whether here or abroad????) Things that make you go "Mmmmmm???" LOL
My Take on Khadaffi's Threat to EU of an African Immigrant Wave
I know some people may get all wigged-out over Khadaffi [see I told you he's a no good SOB] after reading the article you noted here EC. But here some things to consider. First like most leaders in this world Khadaffi is a bit of a showman / salesman / gambler [including bluffer] / & GANGSTER [as they say you can hate the player or you can hate the game]. Now the big time gangsters [US / UK / NATO] ganged up on him in the 1980s- culminating w FRAMING him for that BUM PanAM 103 RAP [I'm willing to defend that statement w facts if need be], & then ganstering a few $billion from him, before they would agree to 'play' nice [this was their old 'Rope-a-Dope' strategy] & loosen their stranglehold on Libya [at-least for a minute or so]. So Khadaffi looked at away to get some pay-back. And what's the one thing the so-called 'liberal' Europeans fear as much, if not more than, the old Soviet Union? An un-checked 'invasion' of Africans [both N-African Muslim Arabs but especially Black Africans even more so]. So he decided he would try get his money [plus interest] back that they gangstered from him [on that sham PanAm 103 beef] by playing the race-card [for real]. Now the so-called 'liberal / enlightened' Europeans are willing to 'tolerate' a few token Blacks / Africans especially if they find them useful [IE: high profile sports stars or dirty-work laborers], & some will even get a little funky w 'em [IE: 'Jungle Fever' style] now & then [thats what the Italian PM is currently accused of doing w a 17yr old N-African prostitute] & a few will even marry some. But anything that looks like a reverse of what happened in the 1400s when the Castilian white Christians in Spain finally drove the Black African / Afro-Asiatic Islamic Moors out along w the Brown Afro-Asiatic Sephardic Jews [those whom they didn't do-in under the Spanish Inquisition- all just prior to / concurrent w Spain's unleashing of the Conquistadors & Ole Chris Columbus on the Native Americans -&- spearheading the 'Great Slave Trade'] - OH HELL NO!!!
Now Khadaffi's language on this wise might not have been so 'politically correct' [if he even said it that way- because he speaks Arabic & they do put words in your mouth to make you look bad if they don't like you - just ask Min Farrakhan {who speaks English} or Pres Ahmadinajad] - but like a true gangster dealing w even bigger gangsters he said in a way he felt he had to be sure that they got the message.
@ ZCommunications.Org a guy named Micheal McGehee wrote a couple good articles about some of the so-called 'left' buying into this humanitarian intervention via military action / the armed rebels as civilians hype- while ignoring the attacks on Black Africans by these rebels [DemocracyNow! definitely comes to mind {see the guy featured on Wed's March-23rd show} w 'The Real News' less so]. They've also seemed to have bought into the hype that what's going in Libya was/is a so-called 'non-violent' peoples democratic uprising- though there is evidence that they are inspired by so-called Al-Qaeda doctrine. Note that the rebel strong-hold is in Eastern Libya which shares a border w Egypt {& is where much / most of Libya's oil is} -&- The Islamic Brotherhood is strong in Egypt [Al-Qaeda's number 2 Al-Zawahiri started in Egypt's Islamic Brotherhood & the so-called lead 9-11 hi-jacker Atta was also Egyptian]. McGehee also notes that the rebel flag is the old western aligned Monarchy that Khadaffi over-threw in 1969. And an Al-Qaeda inspired / old western aligned Monarchy inspired armed revolt- doesn't sound like a grass-roots peoples democratic non-violent uprising to me. As Glen Ford & others here at BAR keep saying - before we start cheer-leading for the rebels vs Khadaffi we need know Just 'Who are These Guys'?
The Rebel's first rejected a negotiated truce offer by Pres Chavez while insisting on a UN / NATO imposed no-fly zone. But they still can't beat Khadiffi's forces back into full retreat so now they're talking about a no-drive zone as well. If that don't do the trick they'll probably demand a so-called 'limited intervention w boots on the ground'. The rebels want to control all of Libya but the US / EU will probably be happy w access / control of Libya's main oil fields in the East- without having to deal w Khadaffi [IE: If the US / UK / France / NATO can't get rid of Khadaffi they'll settle for partitioning East Libya, where most of the oil is, from the rest of Libya].
AND- French Pres Sarkozy is the last somebody to be pointing fingers at Khadaffi as a racist. In 2005 when he was mayor of Paris, Sarkozy [who's from an immigrant back-ground himself] he led a vicious crack down [ala Boss Daley 1968] on the N-African immigrant population who rose up about their bad living conditions - referring to them as SCUM.
Looks like there's more than one racist element at play
100,000 Africans may pour into Niger from Libya: UN
Apparently most of the rebels, like the French and Americans, think all niggas look alike too:
The United Nations (UN) has warned that up to100,000 African migrants may seek to escape strife-torn Libya and cross into poverty-stricken Niger in the next few weeks, fearing they may be killed by anti-Gaddafi Libyans who believe they are mercenaries.
At least two black Africans have reportedly been lynched in the city of Benghazi on suspicions of being mercenaries hired by Gaddafi to murder anti-government protesters. (Funny how the Black Africans are "reportedly" dead but no one questions the number of dead rebels, although they do question the number of civilians murdered by the Coalition of Assholes)
The UN stated that more than 1,000 Africans have already entered Niger over the past week through the Dirkou border post. According to Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), these arrivals said that many of their compatriots who remained behind in Libya are hiding in fear for their lives.
"They have reported that many are blocked in houses with no chance of leaving and with no help, in Mursuk, Sabah, Misrata, Tripoli and Benghazi," a report from the agency said.
Moreover, such a sudden influx of people would place a tremendous strain on a country (Niger) that is already burdened by overwhelming povert y.
Separately, the anti-Gaddafi National Libyan Council in Benghazi said it believes Niger, Mali and Kenya are sending troops to support Gaddafi.
The Council spokesman Hafiz Ghoga urged the UN to bomb the "African mercenaries of Ghaddafi." Ghoga has also advocated the murder of “African mercenaries” (Huh, so Black folk don't EVER get no-fly zone protection??)
U.N. officials are alarmed by these developments, fearing these accusations will incite even more violence against black African workers in parts of Libya controlled by the rebels. The agency added thatit would be unlikely for these African governments to be sending mercenaries to Libya now. Ghoga also said there was also strong evidence that "the government of Algeria" was supporting this alleged African offensive against the people of Libya.
Wow, see we get a double-dose of racism enabled by Mr. Post-Racial. The "Black"President is not only helping keep Europe White, but is also helping to keep Black Africans out of Libya. That's what I call a two-fer or "Change you can believe in."
Now did yall notice this story came from INTERNATIONAL news organization, I aint heard no peckawoods in mainstream media interview any Black Africans about being lynched, massacred and driven out of Libya by the democracy-loving "Rebels." God, Black folks who support Obama must be the dumbest goddamn people on the planet. You won't hear this story-line on "Meet the Press" or even NPR from our racist media.
Piss-ass Obama and his White Puppet Masters are creating a humanitarian crisis of their own, but Niggas don't count in the Age of Obama and the Age of the Tea Party.
I agree with you on most if not all points
First, I'm not here to cheer on the Col. nor pray for his defeat. I have little doubt he's a tyrant of sorts, but I have even less doubt about US intentions. The US didn't stop nor did the media report 5 Million Congolese getting slaughtered. I won't even mention Rwanda. And the last instance of "humanitarian intervention" (Kosovo) was an abject lie and failure. Albania and Kosovo have turned into Mafia States, hardly beacons of democracy.
What I believe is that the US is taking a page out of the Neocon/Zionist playbook to "divide and conquer" Libya and anyone else deemed a "threat." Frankly that would include a resurgent US. "Black Consciousness" Movement or "Hippie/Counterculture Movement." It don't matter.
I understand the Col. was "playing the race card" because he understands the xenephobia and racism of the Francophiles and Western Europe in general. Why not "bribe" or shake them down, since they shook him down for Lockerbie which was either a CIA or Mossad job??
What people should take away from the article is that a picture is worth a thousand words. Seeking Sarkozy grin and cheese with the Col. reminds me of the pictures of Donald Rumsfield making nice with Sadaam.
My points were:
1. The Col. has (cynically) operated on behalf of the "West" in keeping the "darkies" out, and
2. This war is about Saudia Arabia and keeping the Shia Crescent in check, and
3. About the US creating a ruse (activating it's Africom bullshit) to create another military beachhead.
4. Fomenting division among the Libyans--divide and conquer--to steal their oil, and last
5. To make sure the MIC gravy train keeps rolling. That no "peace" dividends be reinvested in domestic programs/benefits.
The US is a moral cesspool. You and I both know that in order to steal Libyans oil on the cheap they will train, arm and bribe A SMALL MINORITY POWER CLIQUE, the same friggen failed playbook they are operating under now with Sunni despots. One day soon, real soon, the world is going to bring the US a big surprise, the moral rot and mendacity can't and won't continue.
The sad thing (if "sad" is the appropriate word) is that no one wants to drink the oil anyway. The Col. is more than willing to sell it to the West, indeed that's why the Lockerbie slated was wiped clean, that is to give the West "moral cover" to deal with the Col. That's why something else is afoot, and in my mine that's two things primarily: Containing Iran and the Shia foremost, and keeping the "darkies" in check secondarily, i.e. staunching African immigration to the West.
Both Pepe and BAR have mentioned controlling the immigration flow in stories.
Continuity with Bush, yes indeed
Jeremy Scahill on America’s Covert War in Yemen
“Democracy Now!” correspondent Jeremy Scahill says that the “Obama administration has really escalated the covert war inside of Yemen” and “it could get much worse if Ali Abdullah Saleh decides to unleash the U.S.-trained counterterrorist units on his own population.”

Miranda is Obama's latest victim
The number of instances in which Obama has violently breached his own alleged principles when it comes to the War on Terror and the rule of law are too numerous to chronicle in one place. Suffice to say, it is no longer provocative or controversial when someone like Yale Law Professor Jack Balkin writes, as he did the other day, that Obama "has more or less systematically adopted policies consistent with the second term of the George W. Bush Administration." No rational person can argue that or even tries to any longer. It's just a banal expression of indisputable fact.
