Cory Booker: A Clear and Present Threat to Public Education

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

What media call "philanthropy" for the public schools are actually seed monies to establish a private "market" in publicly-financed education - an enterprise worth trillions if successfully penetrated by corporate America. Cory Booker, one of the "New Black Leaders" financed by the filthy rich, is key to creating a "nationwide corporate-managed schools network paid for by public funds but run by private managers."

Cory Booker: A Clear and Present Threat to Public Education

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

"Booker remains determined to make Newark the national showcase city for corporate education."

Eight years ago, when Cory Booker made his first bid for mayor of Newark, New Jersey, I exposed him in the pages of The Black Commentator as a product of the Milwaukee-based Bradley Foundation and its network of right-wing think tanks. Back in 2002, Booker was a one-term Newark City Councilman and advocate of publicly-funded vouchers for private schools. Millions of dollars in contributions from his many friends on the Right allowed Booker to vastly outspend the incumbent mayor - but he still lost. I like to take a little credit for Booker's defeat, the first time around, for having warned Newark voters that Booker was a Trojan Horse for corporate right-wingers who were determined to privatize the public schools.

Booker won his second attempt to capture Newark City Hall, in 2006, and former Mayor Sharpe James went to prison for corruption. There wasn't too much Mayor Booker could do to privatize Newark's schools, since they've been under the control of the State of New Jersey since 1995. Then, last year, Booker got very lucky. New Jersey elected Chris Christie, a fiercely reactionary Republican, as Governor. Cory Booker - still the same Trojan Horse for the rich right-wingers that have funded his career - had found a political partner in his mission to turn over the public schools to corporations. Booker was already tight with the Black right-wing billionaire, Oprah Winfrey. It was on Oprah's show that fellow billionaire Mark Zukerberg, the FaceBook owner, announced a $100 million gift to Newark schools, to be administered jointly by Booker and the Republican Governor.

"Booker is still the same Trojan Horse for rich right-wingers that have funded his career."

Booker has since gotten commitments for another $40 million from Microsoft's Bill Gates, a New York hedge fund manager, and an educational investment corporation. Cory Booker is rolling in the dough and poised to make his right-wing dreams come true.

Just as I warned, back in 2002, Booker remains determined to make Newark the national showcase city for corporate education - only now, he's got the cash. And he is now part of a full-blown network of capitalists whose mission is to turn American education into a market, for power and profit. The billionaires are circling public education like birds of prey, seeking to transform charter schools into an interlocking, national, for-profit business, worth trillions of dollars. That's what the hedge funds are after, and that is the mission of Booker money-bag John Doerr and his California-based New Schools Venture Fund, whose goal is to "build an entirely new sector of public education" through private investment. They want nothing less than to create a nationwide corporate-managed schools network paid for by public funds but run by private managers.

Cory Booker and Newark are central to this project, as was Washington, DC, where the viciously anti-union schools chief, Michelle Rhee, will soon be fired after the recent defeat of her Cory Booker-like boss, Mayor Adrian Fenty. The Wal-Mart family and other super-rich right-wingers attempted to take over the DC system through millions in contributions with political strings attached. Oprah Winfrey is using her television platform to boost Michelle Rhee for superintendent of Newark schools. Rhee also has the backing of the Obama administration, through Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Booker, Fenty and Obama. Corporate Trojan Horses, all of them, and deadly enemies of public education.

MORE "UNFORSEEABLE" INEVITABILITY

A college education is worth $50,000 dollars worth of debt. Thank you, Wall Street protectionists!

The privatization cheerleaders in the media never lump all charters together the way they lump all public schools together, because the results would be damning.

Unionized, suburban, public schools outperform both public and charter schools in the cities.

With all of that being said: I am not worried. Oprah doesn't want Booker to get Fentyed (bless her heart); but it is just a matter of time before the rejects start rebelling. The rejects' urban, school boards have been handcuffed by suburban politicians. Corporate, private schools have been allowed to cherrypick students to boost cherrypicked results with the rejects' property tax dollars. "Evidence based" solutions from places like Finland (#1 in the world) have been ignored, because the real goal of the privatizers is to keep their taxes low. Oprah's billions can't stop the reject rebellion to come. A system of winners and LOSERS still produces LOSERS.

I came up in the NYC public school system and I can say for sure that this is definitely a true statement. The quality of the educational experience and the privilege given to certain public schools was always clear to all of us.

But doesn't it always come back to the people imposing their will on whatever system is there?

Apparently our government (The U.S. Government), in collusion with the unions, set up a class/race based system where certain schools would be allowed to get the best teachers and most of the ration of our tax dollars.

I say this as a person who is suspicious of the motives of the people pushing charter schools as well. I outline why below.

Hey, my comment was deleted. Why is that???

Don't they get it?

WE DON'T WANT YOUR STINKING FASCIST, RIGHT-WING, CORPORATE EDUCATION REFORM!

We want democracy.. We want FREEDOM! They're just gonna ram this thing right down our throats huh?

To add to this excellent article.

The economic eviction (Gentrification) of lower-income residents in these neighborhoods -because of economic racism, cuts in jobs, cuts in social services, increased rents, house prices, and property taxes- will eventually turn these Charter schools into all white schools.

The population change in former Black communities will reduce industrial land use when it is redeveloped for commerce and housing: New businesses, catering to a more affluent base of consumers, will move into formerly blighted areas, further increasing the appeal to more affluent migrants and decreasing the accessibility to less wealthy natives.

This is the full spectrum of their game plan. A world for the privileged class ONLY. Where will the poor go? I don't know. I do know that people like Bill Gates are eugenicist who want to sterilize them and make abortion more available through our tax dollars (Obama care).

Abortion

Whats wrong with abortion becoming more available?

The right to lifers, have done a good job of making access to abortion services more difficult across the country. Another bad part of the Obama health care bill is the concessions made to the anti-abortion forces in return for their votes. Abortion should get the same federal support as any other medical procedure. Theirs nothing genocidal about reproductive freedom.

Mr. Ford warned us in 2002

Mr. Ford,

I saved your warnings from the Black Commentator starting in 2002.  I am a Newark Resident.  Your predictions of what this man would do were correct.  City employees are being laid off.  Booker, along with Republican Governor Christie, are trying to privatize the city at the expense of government workers.

Christie and Booker want to eliminate Public Schools and the Board of Education in favor of charter schools just as you predicted.  Unfortunately, we had a Municipal Council that rubber stamped and/or claimed that they were unaware of what he was doing.  While property taxes and utility bills have increased for Newark residents, this Mayor hires people who do not live in Newark and pays them handsomely!

Newark City Government Employees were also given 19 furloughs (temporary layoffs days) from September through the end of this year.

Of course, mainstream media did not investigate with the same vigor and competence as you and your staff did Mr. Ford.

Public indoctrination is not marketable

My wife and I are parents that take education very seriously.  Our son is in private school with top-notch educators but we still supplement his education at home.  We're not wealthy and it would be great if we didn't have to fork out the extra dough but you have to do your best for your kids, right?

I think the biggest problem with public schools is that they only teach humanitarian-type subjects.  I know you get math, science and language studies but they're not given their due.  High school graduates should at the very least have skill sets that make them productive members of general work-forces.  That should be the bare minimum and any parent or kid that doesn't want to get with the program should be cut loose.  We need ditch diggers and burger flippers, too.

Memo to Jerseyites: "Get rid of this punk"

Before he sells you down the road, like his Idol Obama.

Booker has national ambitions and will sell his soul to achieve them.  He has all the qualities that make white oligarchs comfortable.  Keep him at your own risk.  Keep thinking like most Black folks do, "well, he's not that bad, and he can get the white man to pony up money, and you can't."  Nigga puhleeze, the white man ain't ponying up shit without strings attached.

How much is your freedom worth??

Here comes the pain...

"The implosion of municipal budgets continues in cities, counties, and towns across the country unabated, but the most dramatic story of collapse is coming out of Newark, N.J. Last Friday, the New Jersey Civil Service Commission approved a lay-off plan submitted to it last month by Mayor Cory Booker, and the city immediately sent out notices to 2,200, or roughly half, of its employees that their jobs may be affected by lay-offs.

"Within a week, 700 to 800 city employees, close to 20% of the city workforce will get their pink slips as lay-off plans are finalized. The lay-offs include 167 police officers (twice the number in Oakland, Calif, last July that caused a crisis in that city), about 90 firefighters and some 400 sanitation workers whose jobs are being privatized. All of this, plus a property tax increase of 31%, is supposed to yield $110 million for the city over the next two years. This will have no effect on the still-to-be-adopted 2010 budget, however, which is still in deficit by $83 million.

"This level of destruction is still not enough for some people, however. A task force of professional economists commissioned by the city council in August told the council, Tuesday, that the city is STILL spending beyond its means despite the measures the city is taking. The task force recommended a series of scenarios that included 1,175 to 1,964 lay-offs and a 17% to 40% increase in city property taxes; otherwise, the city will face a $106 million deficit in 2011. The recommendations particularly target the police force, which the task force claims the city spends too much on.

"Of course, the "experts" are right that these measures will not solve the crisis. To do that, Lyndon LaRouche pointed out again, we need to clean out the banking system with Glass-Steagall.

"This combination of lay-offs and tax increases seems to be a bit much for some members of the city council, however. "The potential increase of 39% in taxes is totally unrealistic and if implemented will destroy the city completely," East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador told the Newark Star-Ledger."

Oprah-Right wing?

Its a bit much to call Oprah a right winger. To her credit, Oprah has supported gay rights, Oprah stood up to the Texas cattleman, who sued her for good disparagement, she had a show about Islam, being a religion of peace, refused to participate in a Bush Administration delegation to Afghanistan, in the runup, to the Iraq War had several anti-war guests and had a show titled, Is War the Only Answer?
