Freedom Rider: The Corporate Media Enemy

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

Donald Trump and the corporate media are locked in mutual hostility, but they are both enemies of the poor and oppressed. Media tell non-stop lies about foreign leaders abroad and Black people here at home. As servants of corporate power, the media usually kow-tow to whoever wins the White House. They’ve made an exception for Trump, but that doesn’t make them honest journalists -- just flunkies for the other party.

Malcolm X and Human Rights in the Time of Trumpism: Transcending the Masters Tools

by BAR editor and columnist Ajamu Baraka

Malcolm X understood that “oppressed peoples must commit themselves to radical political struggle in order to advance a dignified approach to human rights.” What’s needed is a bottom-up mass movement for People(s)-Centered Human Rights, a “political project in the service of the oppressed” that “names the enemies of freedom: the Western white supremacist, colonial/capitalist patriarchy.” Social revolution is the only solution.

Continued Desecration of Bethesda African Cemetery: We Shall Stay in Our Resistance! Part II

by BAR editor and columnist Dr. Marsha Adebayo

Ethnic cleansing is endemic in the U.S., from the cradle to the grave – and beyond. An African burial ground in Bethesda, Maryland, already paved over for a parking lot, now faces total destruction at the hands of developers. “Can anyone imagine the outrage that would ensue if the Arlington National cemetery or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was being treated with the same disrespect as the Bethesda African cemetery?”

is Time to Move On from MoveOn.org and the Non-Profit Industrial Complex

by Danny Haiphong

The revolution will not be subsidized -- but well-funded facsimiles of “movements” dominate the political landscape of the U.S. “Left.” MoveOn.org “prides itself for exposing the corporate ties of the Republicans but is perfectly content with the corporate ties of the Democratic Party.” And Black Lives Matter “drew significant interest from a consortium of non-profits after receiving millions from the Ford Foundation and Google in 2015 and 2016.”

The Global Dimensions of the Life and Legacy of Malcolm X

by Abayomi Azikiwe

The world cannot realize stability unless the drive for global domination by imperialism is

overthrown. This truism was at the heart of Malcolm X?s struggles. The awareness and activism of people inside and outside the U.S. must be harnessed into a movement committed to fundamental transformation of the exploitative and oppressive system.

To the Memory of Malcolm X: Fifty Years After His Assassination

by Ike Nahem

Half a century after his murder, Malcolm X has been transformed into “a harmless icon, with his sharp revolutionary anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist political program diluted and softened.” Therefore, it is vital that we celebrate and study the real Malcolm X, who “rejected lesser-evilism and the two-party set up and division of labor that oversaw the capitalist system of racism, imperialism, and exploitation.”

Across the U.S., Police Contracts Shield Officers From Scrutiny and Discipline

by Reade Levinson

Union power has been in steady decline in the U.S. -- except for police unions, whose contracts “often provide a shield of protection to officers accused of misdeeds and erect barriers to residents complaining of abuse,” according to a Reuters investigative report. Citizen complaints are seldom sustained, even in cities with police review boards. Cops in 18 cities can prevent release of documents showing prior allegations of brutality.

Zambian Government Continues Crackdown on Media

by Nate Singham

The Left is under growing pressure in Zambia, where a right-wing government holds sway. Police raided the home of Dr. Fred M’membe, a former editor of The Post, a progressive, mass circulation newspaper that was shut down earlier on spurious tax charges. The closure brought to four the number of Zambian media outlets shut down in less than five months.

Freedom Rider: Human Rights Industry Protects Imperialism

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

When so-called Human Rights organizations are financed by the one percent they dependably echo the priorities and prejudices of their influential sponsors.  So it is that Amnesty International is an energetic source of war propaganda on behalf of US imperial efforts in the Middle East and elsewhere. Their "report" of a supposed "human slaughterhouse" operated by the Syrian regime is the latest installment in a campaign to justify US intervention in the Middle East.

Continued Desecration of Bethesda African Cemetery: The Community Fights Back!

By BAR Editor and Columnist, Dr. Marsha Adebayo

In the parts of the US which were once slave country, from New England to Florida to Texas, the burial grounds of African slaves are being uncovered, often by commerical developers intent on building yet another badly needed strip mall.  In Bethesday MD, a suburb of the nation's capital, our columnist Dr. Abadeyo recounts the struggle of that community to protect the resting places of their, and our ancestors.

Trump's Foreign Policy: Continuity or Break?

by Danny Haiphong

Some things do change depending on who and which of the two US ruling parties are in power.  US imperialism isn't one of them.  The "foreign policies" of both parties are the maintenance and extension of global US hegemony through military, economic, cultural and diplomatic means.  Trump and his team may pretend to or actually hate some of the players, but they are down for the game, which builds on the foundations of previous administrations.

Revolution Beyond Blue Bubbles

by Paul Street

BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors Iowa City speech, according to Paul Street, fell short of any class analysis of the Trump victory, how to fight facism, or the road ahead. While the Movement For Black Lives declined to endorse presidential candidates, its vision still does not reach beyond the confines of the two ruling parties.  And socialism, despite Bernie Sanders, is a word the BLM leaders never mention.

Alternative Facts on 7 Countries’ Terrorists

by BAR poet in residence Raymond Nat Turner

This and every year since the dawn of this country, most terrorist acts in the US have been perpetrated by white Christian males. So how, our poet asks, do we make sense of Trump's attempted travel ban and its effect on terrorism inside the US? Do they really fear that white boys will be trained in Somaila, Yemen, Iraq or Iran?

Gambia; A Very African Coup

by Thomas C. Mountain

Just another week in neocolonial Africa, where every country’s military is armed, clothed, equipped and trained by the US through AFRICOM. Reports in the western press of a corrupt president refusing to leave office and being ousted to universal acclaim by the joint intervention of the Nigerian Air Force and Senagalese ground troops obfuscate or omit most of the story.

Ida B. Wells-Barnett : Iola, Princess of the Press & Feminist Crusader for Equality and Justice

By Kiilu Nyasha

Ida B. Wells was the kind of black leader we don't see much of any more.  Unlike today's leaders, the heads of nonprofit organizations financed by the self-interested generosity of the one percent, Ida's career was financed by the readers of the black press, from ordinary African American people.  This gave Wells the unique ability to tell the truth without fear or favor, which is no more than the duty of every journalist.  Ida, or Iola as she called herself in some early dispatches from lynching country has been gone from us longer than she was here by now, but her spirit is still felt, wherever some of us are brave.

Roland Martin: That Hustla Ova There Tryna Sell Us School Privatization

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

Roland Martin pretends to be a journalist. But what does a guy do when the one percent won't pay for an informed public? Roland is a hustla for hire, and he's found a dependable set of clients. Roland is all about blackening up and selling us the destruction and privatization of public schools, which is what both elite Democrats and Republicans want. Journalists tell the truth without fear or favor. Hustlas do what they're paid to do, and the charter school sugar daddies pay well.

DeVos, Obama, Booker, Trump – All Enemies of Public Education

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

Betsy DeVos barely won confirmation as the next secretary of education, so dreadful is the performance of the charter schools she promotes in Michigan. But the educational atrocities of the DeVos schools are inseparable from the larger war against public education. Barack Obama doubled charter school enrollment, and Cory Booker, who hopes to be president, is a fanatical advocate of private school vouchers. Trump and Devos aren’t the only villains.

Freedom Rider: "Resist Trump, Resist the Democrats"

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

Any “resistance” to Trump that allies itself with Democrats, is futile. The Democrats are “unprincipled scoundrels” who “have no desire to move away from their corporate sugar daddies.” If the same people that now declare themselves foes of Trumpism “spend time wondering if they should back Cory ‘the hooker’ Booker or Elizabeth Warren in 2020, or ponder who should run the Democratic National Committee, they aren’t resisting anything.”
