The right-wing lynch mob is out to destroy Planned Parenthood in the same way it smashed ACORN. In addition to the usual white suspects, “these pro-death marauders” are reinforced by “black preachers, and Christian soldiers like MLK’s anti-abortion activist niece Alveda King.” Their “propaganda has cropped up recently in black and Latino Southern California neighborhoods.”

Lately, the sound of galloping hooves and rustling white sheets has risen in a deafening squall from the Capitol. Like their Klan ancestors, elite white males in Congress’ political lynch mob are once again savaging communities of color. The House’s vote to gut Planned Parenthood is a criminal act against poor and working class women and their families. In many rural and urban neighborhoods there are few affordable alternatives to the health care provided by Planned Parenthood and other reproductive rights service providers. These clinics are the frontline of preventive care in poor working class white communities and communities of color, providing pregnancy and STD testing, contraception, pap smears, abortions, and counseling for families with little to no health coverage.
Ever since its midterm elections’ sweep, the far right has ramped up its unrelenting drive to theocracy, using reproductive rights as its battleground. Drawing on the sabotage of ACORN, Speaker John Boehner and a host of other GOP and so-called Blue Dog Democrat fascists are bound and determined to take down Planned Parenthood. Extending Hyde Amendment restrictions on federal funding for abortions to private providers is central to their agenda. Too spineless to criminalize women who seek abortions outright, Religious Right politicians instead choose to pillage health care provisions that keep women from falling deeper into poverty, illness, and economic dependence. Hiding behind Orwellian claims of being pro-life, far right politicians exercise draconian control over the bodies of poor women and their families in the name of God, guns, and bloody fetuses. Why not just jail ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out?

It should be no revelation that when poor women are denied access to decent affordable reproductive care—including access to safe abortions—families and communities suffer. While federal and state governments dismantle education and health care funding, the American military regime goes untouched. Because black and Latino communities are on the frontlines of imperialist military recruitment and educational inequity, few people of color would argue that government handouts to the military industrial complex should trump education funding. However, reproductive justice just doesn’t have the same political cache or urgency amongst progressives of color. Consequently, conservative reactionary forces within the African American community have successfully allied with the Religious Right in a revived anti-abortion billboard campaign targeting black women. This propaganda has cropped up recently in black and Latino Southern California neighborhoods. By implying that aborting black babies makes them an “endangered species,” these billboards evoke plantation era regimes of social control.

In essence, bad “genocidal” black women don’t know their place, don’t know that they were put here to be God’s sacrificial vessels and don’t seem to grasp that only evil promiscuous misguided Jezebels get knocked up. They also haven’t gotten Sarah Palin’s “telegram” that women who are forced to have unwanted children will earn more, achieve higher education levels, and have a markedly better quality of life than women who aren’t. These ignorant bad black women destroy black communities with their arrogant self-absorption and unchecked sexual license. After all, black women who exercise control over their own bodies and destinies commit race betrayal and gender sacrilege.
How do we know these gospel truths? Powerful white male legislators, black preachers, and Christian soldiers like MLK’s anti-abortion activist niece Alveda King tell us so. They tell us that abortion is the greatest civil rights threat of our era. Like their Islamic fundamentalist comrades in the Middle East, these pro-death marauders know all too well that female sexuality is a dangerous commodity that only the jackboot of big government can control. Complicit with black hyper-religiosity and black nationalist delusions, silent progressives of color give them this license.

Trust Black Women
Nixakliel, I believe you are an intelligent, well read person with a healthy sense of skepticism. On this issue we will have to agree to disagree.
I remain convinced that this abortion/genocide construct is nothing more than wedge issue cooked up by rightwing Euro-Americans and dished out by their negro servants. This phony controversy plays on AA fears, anxieties and weaknesses. This issue exploits the long simmering conflict in AA culture around male/female roles; what AA's see as ideal vs. reality. Many AA men and women support the ideal of patriarchy. Yet, in reality AA women are forced to shoulder responsibilities that women in other ethnic groups are spared.
This jarring difference between what is ideal and what is real causes a lot of free floating anger, resentment and anxiety in both AA men and women. This issue lassoes those emotions and focuses them into counterproductive and distracting actions.
To me, the crux of this disagreement is not Planned Parenthood or even abortion. The crux of this disagreement is trust. I trust AA women to make responsible decisions about their bodies. I trust that AA women, if they have access to adequate resources and education, will choose the tools to plan and space their children so that all of them may thrive. I trust AA women to weigh the impact of their reproductive decisions on their families, relationships and future career prospects. I trust AA women to be responsible parents. I trust Black women.
I Agree that Its an Issue of Trust -But...
We do need to Trust [have faith] that when mature adult people [men or women] of good will & intent have all relevant info & facts on any issue they can & will make intelligent / correct choices... But the reality is that the Black family has been under attack from day one since the first slave-ship arrived in the west [actually before that- because it started w the slavers going into the heart of Mother Africa & breaking up African families & even communities- before herding them into the bowels of those slave-ships]. That is why this is an issue to even be discussed. We've been put under conditions that foster dis-trust & dis-unity within the ranks of Black people as a whole - especially between Black men & women. As a result too many Brothers are locked up &/or just hanging out -&- too many Sisters are forced to try to make it on their own. This is a situation which the enemies of our people can readily exploit.
And PPFA has targeted immature teen-age girls without parental guidance [by design]. Further it is far less of a traditional institution of the Black community than the Black Church- with all of its ills & short-comings - but still produced leaders like Rev Dr ML King & Mrs Fannie Lou Hammer.
But I've said my piece, so we can agree to disagree on this particular topic. Peace
I Can't Resist....
Then the question becomes: how do AA's begin to build the foundation of trust necessary for the advancement of our community? AA's will not succeed in this country or any other unless we are able to work together in relative harmony toward common goals.
I agree that there has always and will always be a concerted effort by outside forces and their internal agents to maintain distrust and disunity in the AA population. Their powerful propaganda has worked with devastating effect. How do we counter it with an AA centered narrative? How do we, as a people begin to coalesce around our own vision, values and needs? Shared vision and values that respect AA internal diversity.
One of our traditional strengths as a people has been our acceptance of diversity in thought and people. In the book about AA mariners in the age of sailing ships, Black Jacks, by W. Jeffrey Bolster , the author describes this strength as:
"...the instinct of Africans in America (and their black descendants) not to separate, but to envelop; not to emphasize purity, but to embrace diversity."
However, AA's sojourn in a harsh, dog eat dog country where this strength is considered a weakness and puts us at a distinct disadvantage relative to our neighbors.
I don't trust in any institution in this society to do right by AA's. Even if we got universal healthcare tomorrow, it would be structured to shortchange the AA population in a systematic manner. I think the only option for true advancement will come only through the development of AA controlled institutions for education, housing, healthcare, business creation and finances. As we have seen with the infiltration and corruption of the AA church by Christian Dominionists, AA institutions would always require vigilance to maintain independence.
I don't agree with every single point that Ms. Hutchinson makes in this piece, but I do respect her courage, passion and intelligence. I also don't agree with your all of your views, Nixakliel, but I do respect your passion, attention to detail and intelligence. In the end, I think it is important for AA's to find a way to disagree (sometimes vehemently) yet still search for common ground and build on the solid earth between us.
I See This Issue Differently
Nixakliel, I see this issue differently. There are many destructive forces that besiege the AA community:
Abortion is not on the list because I don't buy the rightwing propaganda about "genocide". The Rightwingers who are directing that puppet show don't care one whit about AA people, whether we are in the womb, the tomb or anyplace in between. I see this abortion/genocide meme as just another divide and conquer operation from our traditional adversaries.
They are happy to see us snarling and snapping at each other, distracted, disunified and weakened against their constant assault against the AA commuity. This pseudo-controversy is also a backdoor effort to disrupt reproductive autonomy in their target group: young Euro-American women. AA people are just pawns in this game or paraphrasing Lorreta Ross of Sistersong "Black women are roadkill in the Right's drive to rein in White women."
To me, people who are concerned about high rates of abortion in the AA community should support:
In other words, create the conditons that proactively reduce the need for abortion and result in healthy babies and families.
All Those Points You Make Are Valid- But...
All of your the points you make are valid & with out a doubt needs immediate attention. But First of All- I don't see things thru the lens of so-called poly-trickal left vs right, Dems vs GOP, liberal vs conservative, women's lib vs men [especially relative Black men, women & family] - paradigm. Trends forecaster Gerald Celente' always refer to himself as a Political Atheist - certainly Black people should consider if not political atheism at least Political Agnosticism & Pragmatism. Thus I see things based on True vs false, right vs wrong, does it make sense for us as Black / African people or not paradigm. As far as I'm concerned, this has nothing to do w right-wing FOX Noise hype. Though it was a shame to see MLK's niece have to get on stage w the likes of Glen{what the heck}Beck & Sarah{'s ailin}Palin [on the anniversary of MLK's 'I have a Dream' Speech]- in order to speak on this issue - And to a bunch of white Tea Baggers at that.
Then the author of this post equates cutting back FED funding for Planned Parenthood w defunding ACORN [which I don't really buy - Note ACORN got $53million from 1994-2009 but PPFA has gotten $335 million this fiscal yr alone & $50-100 million/yr even during Bush Jr's Regime - Then Compare what services ACORN provided for Black, Brown & working class people vs what PPFA does]- BUT also w RAPE- which is simply ridiculous. If women's libbers want to go after the Gov't [Repugs & DIMs] on rape- there is a slew of real [not fictitious] cases they could take on IE: The Slew of rapes of- women in the US Military, women w Xe / Black-Water, w US soldiers & Xe type mercenaries raping Iraqi & Afghani women & boys in Abu Ghraib / Gitmo type black sites, w rape of women & young men in the Prison Industrial Complex. etc, etc, etc [Let alone the $multi-billion hard-core porn industry whose BIZ is depicting grossly demeaning / & abusive images of women]...
YET- The fact is that the white Power Elites have been obsessed w controlling the populations of the Black, Brown, 3rd World & even poor whites since the time Thomas Malthus. Margret Sanger's Negro Project & Birth Control League [now Planned Parenthood / Family Planning], Tricky Dick Nixon's phony poverty assistance prog [which Bro Sam Yette's book 'The Choice' helped expose], Kissinger's NSSM 200 Memo- are all manifestations of this obsession. They all represent White Power Elites schemes to control us by limiting our population growth. In fact every since slavery these type folks have had a sick [perverse] fascination w Black sexuality. AND- If Family Planning was about helping families why don't they offer family counseling for couples [married & even unmarried], family nutritional & financial assistance services, adoption services, pre & post natal care services, etc [at between $50-$350million/yr from the Gov't alone- it ain't like they don't have the funds]? Why is it the main- if not only 'services' they offer is artificial birth control [not even advice for non-artificial birth control methods] & abortion so-called 'services' - along w so-called safe-sex = condoms counseling & some pregnancy counseling [which can easily lead to an abortion referral]? From this ad alone its clear what BIZ Family Planning International / Planned Parenthood is in - AND IT AIN'T ABOUT PLANS FOR HAVING A FAMILY / PLANNING TO BE A PARENT!!! It would be more honest it they went back to their original name back in Maggie Sanger's day- 'The Birth Control League'!
Putting single adult women aside for the moment - Why does the FPI / PPFA insist on being able to offer these services to married women without their husbands' involvement or even knowledge [which I know for a fact is part of their strategy in Africa] -or- worse yet - to a teenage girl even without parental involvement [an adolescent can't even get a cavity filled without parental consent]??? What kind of family planning [IE: info & services to assistance w building families] is this???
And as far as I'm concerned the numbers don't lie - if you take note of them [as so many abortion advocates try not to]- 52 -55% of all Black pregnancies & 33 - 35% of all Hispanic pregnancies are now ending in abortion [you can derive this from Planned Parenthoods own stats - I did to confirm it - because when I heard it I was SHOCKED].

June 1, 2009 DemocracyNow! Show- Dr. George Tiller (1941-2009): Murdered Abortion Provider Remembered for Lifelong Dedication to Women’s Reproductive Health.
Supporters of reproductive rights are mourning the killing of the abortion provider Dr. George Tiller. The sixty-seven-year-old Tiller [who was white] was shot Sunday as he attended services at his Wichita, Kansas church. The gunman fled the scene, but a suspect was later caught in a Kansas City suburb. The suspect, fifty-one-year-old Scott Roeder, has a history of involvement in anti-abortion activism and was once arrested and jailed on explosives charges. He has ties to the right-wing separatist group known as the Freemen. We look at the life of Dr. Tiller with five women who worked alongside him to uphold reproductive rights: two women doctors who fly into Wichita every month to work alongside him performing abortions; two of the attorneys who defended him through years of legal harassment, one in Wichita and one in New York; and Ellie Smeal of the Feminist Majority Foundation, who knew him for twenty years.
AMY GOODMAN: Dr. Tiller’s clinic is one of just three in the nation performing late-term abortions after the twenty-first week of pregnancy. Dr. Tiller faced constant threats and incidents of violence and vandalism. His clinic was bombed in 1985. In 1993, Dr. Tiller survived an assassination attempt with gunshot wounds to both arms. Two years earlier, thousands of anti-abortion activists tried to block his clinic during the “Summer of Mercy” protests organized by the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. He had recently asked prosecutors to increase legal action against anti-abortion activists who targeted the clinic.
President Obama said he’s “shocked and outraged” by Dr. Tiller’s killing. Attorney General Eric Holder later announced he would order the deployment of US Marshals to protect women’s health clinics as well as doctors across the nation.
In a statement, Tiller’s family said, quote, “George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality heath care despite frequent threats and violence. We ask that he be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated servant on behalf of the rights of women everywhere.”
Today, we’ll look at the life of Dr. George Tiller with five women who worked alongside him to uphold reproductive rights.

Students for Life of America (SFLA) today released the video which was made at the Feminist Majority Foundation's annual Women's Leadership Conference held at the National Education Association (NEA) on March 9.
Tiller, who currently faces 19 criminal charges for illegal late-term abortions in the state of Kansas, at first feigned ignorance of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, a federal bill signed into law in 2002 that protects born children from murder and illegalizes infanticide. However when questioned further about the measure he spoke of his ideological objection to the legislation, saying, "Let's say you have 15 or 16, you had 1 slip out with a heartbeat; that is not a viable fetus, but that is born alive or has a heartbeat. Then you have to take that non-viable fetus and rush it directly to the hospital against the woman's wishes..."

Jan 2011: Philadelphia Abortion Doctor Accused of Murdering Babies, Patient; Lax State Oversight Faulted: A Philadelphia abortion doctor has been arrested on charges of murder and performing illegal abortions in the deaths of seven babies and a patient. Dr. Kermit Gosnell was arrested last week along with his wife and eight unlicensed employees. A grand jury report accuses Gosnell of regularly and illegally delivering live, viable babies in the third trimester, then murdering the newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors. Gosnell and his staff are also accused of killing a pregnant mother by providing her with too much anesthesia. The report singles out Pennsylvania health and medical regulators for ignoring complaints against the clinic dating back to 1993. State officials are said to have deliberately avoided enforcement of laws mandating that abortion clinics provide the same level of care as other medical providers [meaning Gosnell apparently had a licensed clinic - but w poor over-sight / enforcement]. Gosnell is believed to have earned at least $1.8 million a year for his practice, mostly in payments from low-income women of color [NOTE: 75% of PPFA Abortion Clinics in or near Black & Brown neighborhoods].
Feb 15 2011: AMY GOODMAN: Finally, the very horrifying news out of Pennsylvania: Governor Tom Corbett said on Tuesday a number of state workers have been fired and the state’s abortion clinics will come under greater oversight, following a probe into a Philadelphia clinic where a woman and seven newborn babies were killed. CECILE RICHARDS: Look, it’s a horrific story, Amy. And I think that what is—in some ways, to me, it really underscores the danger of what’s happening in Congress, which is, what we’re seeing is this attempt to move a legal medical procedure that many women need—abortion—and putting it in the back alley again [NOTE: Gosnell has a clinic - he's accused of working in un-sanitary conditions but so was Tiller] and putting it—putting folks like Planned Parenthood, who are responsible medical providers—we have the highest-quality staff. We have medical doctors from the most prestigious medical schools. Our doors are open to anyone to come and visit and see exactly what we do. It’s so important that we have providers who will provide women with excellent care who need it. And I think the case in Pennsylvania is just a case in point. My fear is that if the House of Representatives is successful and they put Planned Parenthood completely out of business, which is their goal, we are going to see more stories like this, because we are going to see women who will be desperate to terminate a pregnancy, and they will go anywhere to do it. We cannot go back to those days in America. I think this is a very cautionary tale. My heart breaks for the women in Pennsylvania that were victims in this situation. And that is why we need providers who are reputable, who are first-class providers, who are well known, so that women can go to get the healthcare they need from someone that they can trust [Thats called SPIN - AND- PPFA fought hard against outlawing Late-Term Abortions].

SO Both of these guys were in the same abortion BIZ, both did controversial late-term abortions. Both were / have been brought up on charges of performing illegal late-term abortions [Tiller's was described as legal harassment]. But Tiller who was white is presented by DemocracyNow! as a Dr Welby / Dr Kill-dare [ironic name ain't it] type hero, while Gosnell who is Black is already being condemned by DemocracyNow! & Ms Richards Pres of PPFA- even though he hasn't even been tried yet - let alone found guilty. So in this case would you call this a case of Democracy-Now! Or Hypocrisy-Now!
Irony
There are several ironies with this Rightwing cultural assault:
1. Republicans ran on a platform of job creation yet, they have been focused almost entirely on telling grown women how to live their lives. Apparently Rightwing notions of “small government” means no Wall Street fraudster goes to jail, but pregnant women are under threat of prosecution if they so much as bleed at the wrong time.
2. The first programs and services the Rightwing consistently declares should be cut are healthcare, education and housing. Bailing out banks to the tune of trillions of dollars, shoveling money into the international war furnace and securing tax breaks for billionaires are never considered wastes of this nation's treasury. Directing tax dollars to creating healthy, competitively educated and decently housed citizens is considered money down the drain and labeled “entitlements” as if citizens are not worthy of a fair return on their tax dollars.
3. The most glaring irony is in the African-American (AA) community where crisis levels of infant mortality have devastated AA families for the past two decades. Yet, in all of those years AA clergy, AA social conservatives and the even the bulk of AA progressive activists have turned a deaf ear to the keening of despair by AA families who have lost real live breathing babies. Babies with names. Babies who were held and loved. Babies who were part of the future aspirations of their parents and indeed all AA’s.
I wonder if any of these AA clergy who are so passionate about the “evils of abortion” ever met as a group and pledged a portion of their combined churches revenues to funding local community clinics focused on the needs of mothers and babies?
I wonder if the AA social conservatives who shout and moan about “Abortion is Genocide!” have ever planned and built AA community based programs that would boost prenatal and maternal nutrition, access to health care or lend emotional support to young families (whether they are married or not)?
I wonder if AA progressive activists have ever considered the whole picture; instead of just working in their “activism silos” that they form broad coalitions to address the interlinked issues that affect the AA community? Coalitions that do more than set up offices in D.C. and issue yearly reports. Coalitions that actively organize AA’s where and how they live. Coalitions that offer a clear-eyed analysis of the current state of African America. Coalitions with a clear set of objectives for the future and feasible plan to achieve those objectives.
Premature babies, underweight newborns and the babies who die within their first year of life are a part of the experience of nearly every AA family. The pain of real mothers and fathers losing real babies trumps the alarmism of cynical billboard fantasy babies any day.
I Agree w What You're Saying on Most of These Issues BUT...
Afroseer: I hear & agree on what you are saying on most of these issues- But: The Repugs [w the help of many / most Dems & Obama] attack on ACORN [a primarily Black & Brown community organization] is not the same as them going after Planned Parenthood [PPFA]- which was 1st established by Margaret Sanger [initially called the Birth Control League] an avowed white Eugenicist who put her 1st clinics in Harlem & Brooklyn - funded by the Rockefellers. This was part of her Negro Project [which she once apparently referred to as an covert attempt to 'Exterminate the Negro'] - and today 75% of PPFA clinics are still in or near Black & Brown neighborhoods -&- most of which are still run by white folks. By PPFA own stats 55 - 60% of all abortions in the US are Black & Brown un-born babies - that means that OVER HALF- 52-55% of all Black pregnancies end in abortion & 33 -35% of Hispanic pregnancies end abortion - as opposed to 9-10% of white pregnancies [& if you parsed it out you'll probably find less 1-2% of all aborted pregnancies are to affluent white women]. Now that sounds like a national emergency to me - just as you've pointed out about the health & care of born Black Children are also of Great Concern. It could be that between abortion & infant mortality we're losing 65 -75% of our babies before the age of 1.
The Bro Sam Yette [author of 'The Choice'] passed away last month. In 'The Choice' he talks about how Tricky Dick Nixon's [along w Kissinger-Ford-Rockefeller-Bush Sr] regime planned to roll-out a kind of 'Final Solution' to the Black poverty 'problem'. Among its center-pieces was abortion, artificial birth-control & even forced sterilization [Note- this Regime was in power when 'Row v Wade' became the law]. The Nixon regime's reaction to Yette's book was to get him fired from Newsweek. Furthermore you should look up Henry{Heinz} Kissinger's notorious NSSM 200 memo where he states that population control of 13 countries in Africa, Asia, & Latin America [not one European country was listed- not even so-called communist Euro countries] was of vital Econ, Security & Geo-political interest of the US. I know for a fact one of the main organizations pushing this population control agenda in Africa is Family Planning International [FPI]. And part of their tactics in Africa is to set women at odds w their husbands on the issues of birth control & abortion [to increase FPI's influence on African women]- which is a plan of attacking the cohesiveness of African families. Interestingly enough about this time Kissinger was dating Ms MS- Gloria Steinem who was pushing abortion as an essential part of the Feminist Mystique agenda. While She was pro-claiming that 'Women have as much need for a man as a fish for has for a bicycle'- she was getting her swerve on w several lovers- but the 2 most intriguing were Kissinger & a Nixon-Kissinger-Ford-Rockefeller-Bush Sr associate named J Stanley Pottinger- her long time lover.
