The Most Visible Mulattoes: Drake and Obama Match Hip-Hop and Politics

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by BAR columnist Jared Ball

Mulattoes are all the rage in some circles, for obvious presidential reasons.  Deep political and social meaning is invested in the proliferation of luminaries of the 'two-worlds" kind - although little in the way of insight seems to emanate from the mixed parentage arena. The opposite is true. The rapper Drake's case, in particular, "is used to deny, deflect, omit or obscure underlying tensions and exploitation more than as a way to explore, challenge or correct them.

The Most Visible Mulattoes: Drake and Obama Match Hip-Hop and Politics

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by BAR columnist Jared Ball

"Obama, Drake and myself are not, as many like to say of us, 'parts of two worlds.'"

Lorraine Hansberry once cautioned against an artist seeking to ignore the specific nature of their racial categorization, history and experience.  Her point was that to dismiss that particularity with the narrow, anecdotal tale of one's own success was to damage the potential to interpret the reality of a broader community.  To separate the conditions of Black people broadly speaking from the individual success story of this or that individual is a grave mistake.  She said that, "To destroy the abstraction for the sake of the specific is in this case in error."  It continues in 2010 to happen regularly, where the individual experience is used to obscure the conditions of the rest and why I avoid public self-reference as much as possible.  But recently I must admit this has become more and more difficult.  Knowing a bit about me and my politics over the last couple of years I have received more questions from family, friends, colleagues, students and even strangers in the street about being a Black man whose mother is white or a Jew and it is all because of two popular abstractions, or as one author has recently called Barack Obama and the enormously popular rapper Drake, "two of the most visible mulattoes living and working today."  My short answer is always the same and is always a series of questions regarding how, if at all, these people advance political discussions or the conditions of the communities they are said to represent.  I now think my set of questions must expand and become more hostile.

Drake is the Canadian-born, former child actor and nephew of legendary funk bassist Larry Graham.  He is also now a rap superstar whose mother is a Jew and father a Black man, who of course, is described as absent with no context, or serious exploration.  He is just gone as are, apparently and pathologically, all Black fathers. Drake, who proudly proclaims his Judaism and openly hopes to portray Obama in film one day has also been anointed by establishment media as "Hip-Hop's New Religion," "The New Face of Hip-Hop," "The Bill Clinton of Rap," and even "Jew of the Year." But much like Obama's popularity and that of religion, imposed identity and even Bill Clinton, Drake's is similarly used to deny, deflect, omit or obscure underlying tensions and exploitation more than as a way to explore, challenge or correct them.

Instead much of the focus on Drake's Blackness or overall identity has been limited to his physical look, his mannerisms and his lyricism (or lack thereof).  None is directed at his politics.  Too many in Black America and hip-hop have lost this as the key variable in determining someone's overall identity.  Just as the mistake was made with Obama, a mistake for which we continue to suffer, Drake's popularity leads us no further towards interpreting our political world and, more importantly, seizing control over it.  Obama, Drake and myself are not, as many like to say of us, "parts of two worlds."  No.  We are at the nucleus of violently competing, antagonistic and woefully unequal political, racial and ethnic communities.  We who should be best able to shed important and radical light on these issues are often forced to deny them.

"Will his being a Jew and Black help advance the relationship of those two communities?"

So I now add a few more questions in response to those asking my opinion of Drake based on my own similar (yet quite different) background: "Does Drake's being a Jew further connect that community to its own radical traditions?  Do discussions of Drake's Judaism lead to increased socialist formation or criticism of Zionism as the Western European imperial project that Herzl himself claimed or the blunt instrument against the Jewish tendency toward Bolshevism as Winston Churchill said it was?  Drake says he is going to Israel soon, does this mean he is breaking the anti-apartheid boycott of performances there that many have accepted in alliance with Palestinian liberation?  Is that hip-hop? What happened to Sun City?  Does his Blackness mean an adherence to the long-standing Black radical position which holds that the cause of the Palestinians is ours? Will his being a Jew and Black help advance the relationship of those two communities? Do discussions of Drake's Blackness help us better understand the dynamics of the latest publications from the Nation of Islam or why Michael Eric Dyson felt compelled to follow his interview with Farrakhan by ones with critics Abraham Foxman and Stanley Crouch?"

This is what I understand Hansberry to have meant.  This is not about the particulars of Drake or Obama but the abstractions their examples seek to obscure.  This is about the political astuteness of a Black and/or hip-hop community and its spokespeople.  Not because we expect a young man with apparently no political experience to offer sound problem-solving solutions but because we are a community whose political acumen requires a price for our fandom.  Nowhere in the articles reviewed for this commentary, those in praise or in critique, those that focused on his Blackness or his Judaism, were these issues raised.  And this speaks volumes about where we are and why these issues persist as major problems for us today.

Your Mama Is A White Woman Who Happens to Believe In Judaism

Dr. Ball, please explain how Judaism became a race?  Respect or no respect, inquiring minds want to know.  Historians have agreed somewhat with Mr. Koestler when he states,"Khazars (A particular group of White Folks) were the Third World of their day, and they chose a surprising method of resisting both the Western pressure to become Christian and the Eastern to adopt Islam.  Rejecting both, they converted to Judaism."  Are you also trying to perpetrate or continue this most cruel hoax?  Your Mama is a White Woman who happens to believe in Judaism nothing more, nothing less.  I get the feeling you somehow want us to give you a cookie because she is a so "called Jew" same for this person name Drake.  Drake and your mother seems to want to identify with their Khazar side and there is nothing wrong with that.  With that being said, if there behavior is less than what most would consider normal in this mad house, then one could have a frame of referance of why they do what they do.

The real deal

Listen up, it's the White boys that run rap, the niggas is just they "bitches and hoes." Where is rap music? Hardly exists today.

I counted one "rapper" in the Billboard to 40.

http://www.billboard.com/charts/rock-songs#/charts/billboard-200?begin=2...
The White boys pimped the Negroes (some of whom joined in on the gang-banging gleefully) and now "rap" is just a washed out shell of it's former self. Rinse and recycle folks, same ol, same ol.

The "true" rap or Hip Hop culture was suppressed because it was too Afro-centric and uplifting. But the Negroes aided and abetted this for the love of money (quoting the O Jays). HA. The "street smart" Negroes got played by the White boys dangling them greenbacks. Man how I miss NWA. (sigh)

p.s. You forgot to include Benjamin Jealous into the mix. Funny, speaking of rap, those big boned, often overweight lovers, dark-skinned, balding men use to get much love, use to be the flava of the month. I was beginning to think doom and gloom for us high yellow Negroes. Now it seems the pendulum has swing back to the light and bright Negroes.

HA! I'm fashionable again, at least until 2012. Don't worry folks, I'm not a mulatto (not that there's anything wrong with mixed races, different races have been doing the "nasty" since time immemorial). And if I was, I'd be like this giant. "Negritude" is a state of mind, boys and girls, a state of mind.

p.s.s.: Friendly Amendment: Ben Jealous

"Jealous was born in Pacific Grove, California and grew up in Monterey Peninsula, California. His mother, who is black, met his father, who is white, while teaching junior high school in Baltimore."

Touchy Subject

Dr. Ball, I meant no disrespect. You were indeed quoting another author. I am one AA who is tired of Euro Americans defining AA's in animal terms (mulatto or mongrel) or moldy old slave terms (nigger, negro or colored).

Their ancestors were too ignorant to find out what people called themselves* and so they made up stupid names that have become part and parcel of the Euro Supremacist social architecture.

The worst part of it is the use of these degrading terms is woven into the fabric of AA society. These terms reinforce self hatred that keeps AA's from working together for their own interests. At their most extreme, these degrading terms and the self loathing they foster lead us to actively destroy ourselves.

* In every tribal language, the name of the tribe translates into "The People".

Mulattoes....

Hello all,

Just for the record:

1) The use of the term "mulatto" was not by my choice nor do I ever use it. If you read the piece (or listen to it) you will see that I am quoting someone else's use of the term. And this is precisely the point. These terms are still thrown around popularly with little to no appropriate discussion. If you also notice I refer in the piece to myself as a "Black man" whose mother is a Jew. This has always been my preferred self-description because of the politics of race in the U.S. which leads me to...

2) In the U.S. race trumps all so to, as one comment does, deny his Blackness by calling Drake solely a Jew is mistaken in any but specifically this country's context.

OUCH!!!

Come on Dr. Ball?
You Know better than calling folks "Mulattoes" (Lil' Mules!!)
WE get Enough of that shyt from the uneducated and haters… That’s as Racist as the "N-word"...

Although, I agree with most of your analysis I find your perpetration of that vile terminology; a irritating distraction. And being of varied DNA; this blight on our Heritage needs to cease too...

Pardon me while I get all "Cum by ya";
In the final analysis, it’s a HUMAN BEING THING... We are all One Being dividing into a multiplicity of Genes splitting &evolving; in a perpetual cycle of metamorphosis/mutation/migration & reintegration ad infinitum…

YES WE Are @ the center of this DRAMA and must Act responsibly to make the FAMILY Realize that WE are ONE… There is no Victor except Unconditional Love for All & All…

& if WE be mere Slaves for Eurocentric Advantaged … or Attack Dogs for acceptance seeking kinship for lost/diluted blood lines; and fail to bring PEACE to the Masses…

Then we have wasted Our Lives/Purpose and have failed Mama Earth…

Mulattoes Do Not Exist

Mulattoes do not exist. Humans are not "little mules". The Spanish, in their arrogance disrespected their own children by labeling them as animals. These are words and traditions African-Americans (AA's) should not buy into and bring to an end. It is time AA's flush the "one drop rule" set up by distant slave masters. They set up that system so they could sell or barter their own children, like pieces of furniture. They were the original "deadbeat dads".

People who grow up in inter-ethnic households generally identify with their mother's culture. Sometimes the mother transmits her childhood culture. Sometimes she transmits an adopted culture. Sometimes she synthesizes elements of two or more cultures. Where she leads, the kids follow. What she cooks becomes comfort food. What she listens to becomes the music of memory. If she is culturally competent in AA society, her children will be competent also. If she rejects AA culture and people, her children will reject AA's, even if they outwardly look African American.

It is time we move on and stop embracing people who may not want our embrace. Inter-ethnic persons have a right to forge their own sense of identity and we have a right to not care if it doesn't include us.

Drake a mulatto? Wrong he is Jewish

You may wish to refer to rapper Drake as a mulatto but the fact is he is Jewish.

You know....

I used to think one or two other persons were responsible for these things, but now, with a little Facebook experience, I'm not so sure. That picture on the right says much more than a thousand words. Who's responsible, BAR? I'm not complaining, just holding back the............
I have to exert the same type of effort when a well-known, very well respected female, counter-racist theoretician and strategist mixes brilliant analyses with side, truly side splitting humor in her speeches and discussions. Again, I'm not complaining, just exercising my concentration skills. I guess humor is a necessary part of the strategy for victory, especially when it is biting and does the job. And that picture on the right.....

From afar...

I know nothing about Drake. From afar, i.e. decades out of the country, I can still notice how mildly you are putting this, Jared. You wouldn't have had to put it mildly in the 90's 80's, 70's etc. America has really gone mad. The hypnosis is hyper-real, but exists within a very real power apparatus which is complex, functioning superbly and quite totalitarian. Between the Tea Partyers and the left-wing, liberal intellectuals, of course including both, they have created such a politically and mentally oppressive world for Black people and certainly for themselves, as Baldwin would have reminded them. Their destruction comes five minutes after ours. What lies next is so predictable, will be no historical precedent. Such a broken record, such a waste of life and energy. They think they're going to get away with a new world order with a few more colored mascots and administrators. They can't even see the monster in the room, symbolized by the Tea Partyers whose presence and power, hyped or not, indicate blatantly that barbarism will (be allowed to) destroy everything. Again, no historical precedent. 90% of us will be affected, black, brown, red, yellow and white.

This Drake person (I remember

This Drake person (I remember him as Jimmy on Degrassi)is an entertainer - nothing more. Too often, people look to entertainers for leadership on political and social matters. Most of the time, these folks are as mis/dis/uninformed about said matters as the average Joe Schmoe. If entertainers choose to become educated on and become advocates for political issues that's great. They have a built-in audience and giant soapbox that can help inform and motivate the public (but only if their advocacy is geared toward the people's interests, not just to promote corporment propaganda). However, we as a public need to lower our expectations in terms of hoping for entertainers and athletes to take the lead on the pressing issues of the day. Enjoy the ballgame or concert but afterward get thee own self and thy friends and neighbors informed and mobilized.

Brand Obummer made being biracial in vogue. The marginally talented Drake wouldn't get half the ad nauseum media attention if he were a regular black or white guy.

drake and his afrikan side

i just wonder why drake is allowed to drop n-bombs in his lyrics when i bet he would not be allowed to use any demeaning term about those who practice judaism. http://www.elyrics.net/read/d/drake-lyrics/best-i-ever-had-lyrics.html check these lyrics to just one of his songs as he disrespects sistas and again drops a n-bomb.
