Freedom Rider: Wisconsin Assault on Workers
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
Only two years after the party supported by most of organized labor won a decisive national election, the Republicans are on the verge of crushing union power once and for all. But, the White House seems singularly uninvolved. “President Obama, who like all Democrats depends on labor unions to mobilize support, was at best lukewarm in his support of the protests” in Wisconsin“ – which can “be the catalyst for a new movement of political activism or it can be the nail in the coffin.”
Freedom Rider: Wisconsin Assault on Workers
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
“Walker and other Republican governors are using the recession as a ruse to destroy public employee labor unions.”
The state of the Wisconsin is at the epicenter of a new, grim reality. The right wing is determined to destroy the last remaining vestiges of workers’ rights in this country. Newly elected governor Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled legislature have acted on a threat which their party has made all over the country. They plan to eliminate collective bargaining rights for all public employees, and limit the amount of any pay increases to the consumer price index. Only law enforcement and fire fighters would be exempt from this measure.
This salvo should be met with unrestrained and clear opposition from the Democratic Party nationally and from organized labor. Yet the White House response has been muted and underwhelming and labor is still in the grip of a dysfunctional one-way love affair with Obama and refuses to call the president out for his lackluster non-response.
The pitiful response from the White House and the acquiescence in it by big labor are an indication that this is just the beginning of what appears to be a successful Republican attack. Wisconsin should be a rallying cry for the Democratic Party, an opportunity to remind its voters of the consequences of Republican victory. Instead of leading the push back, the White House has demurred and in fact denied any involvement in the fight with Wisconsin activists at the helm.
Wisconsin is a state that exemplifies the Democratic Party’s inability to mobilize voters and keep the spoils of political victory. In presidential elections, Wisconsin is a reliably blue state, but in the 2010 midterm elections a Republican governor emerged triumphant and a long time Democratic senator was defeated. The GOP victories came about because those Democrats who elected Barack Obama stayed home.
“Instead of leading the push back, the White House has demurred.”
It is a recurring theme for the party. They win only when the Republican brand is in complete disrepute and the continual abandonment of their base and propensity to stand down makes a mockery of the victories they do manage to attain. Unlike the right wing, who never relent in their quest for political power, progressives join their misleadership in complacency. They are happy with a few crumbs thrown their way, or a Democrat in the White House, which often amount to the same thing. The end result is that Republicans nearly always have the advantage. A seemingly decisive Democratic win in 2008 does not deter them from making their goals a reality.
The end result of this constant capitulation is that Walker and other Republican governors are using the recession as a ruse to destroy public employee labor unions. The budgetary shortfalls across the country are not the result of exorbitant public employee salaries, as we have been led to believe. The entire American economy is one big ponzi scheme, a house of cards which collapsed after years of deregulation of financial markets and government policies which gave public money to corporations and wealthy individuals. Now that the bill has come due from Democratic and Republican chicanery, workers are handed the check. Wisconsin’s economy will not improve if collective bargaining is off limits to government workers. Those union protections will be gone for good and working people all over the country will suffer because of it.
Fortunately, Wisconsin’s Democratic legislators are of one accord, and refuse to go along with this scheme. So great is their determination that they fled the state capital and the state itself in order to deprive Republicans of a quorum in an effort to kill this legislation once and for all. It is indeed an inspiring sight to see protest intent on stopping this power grab. Thousands have descended on Madison, Wisconsin to make their voices heard and to prevent the demise of an already tottering labor movement.
The sights in Washington DC are not so inspiring. President Obama, who like all Democrats depends on labor unions to mobilize support, was at best lukewarm in his support of the protests. How could he not be, having announced his own pay freeze on federal workers.
“Now that the bill has come due from Democratic and Republican chicanery, workers are handed the check.”
“We had to impose, for example, a freeze on pay increases for federal workers for the next two years, as part of my overall budget freeze. You know, I think those kinds of adjustments are the right thing to do.
“On the other hand, some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin -- where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain, generally -- seems like more of an assault on unions.
“And I think it's very important for us to understand that public employees, they're our neighbors, they're our friends. These are folks who are teachers, and they're firefighters, and they're social workers, and they're police officers. You know, they make a lot of sacrifices, and make a big contribution, and I think it's important not to vilify them, or to suggest that somehow all these budget problems are due to public employees.”
The statement is classic Obama. On the one hand he says he disagrees with the governor, but on the other hand, he deprived federal workers of their rights as well. Instead of calling the president to account, the AFL-CIO praised his aloofness, calling his comments “wonderful” and AFSCME felt the wimpy words were “terrific.”
To their credit, some protesters were not so forgiving, asking why the president did not come to their aid. "‘He owes it to us,’ added Kathie Free, a retired Milwaukee public school social worker. ‘Obama was not put into office just by the big money. He was put into office by millions of poor and middle-class people who walk the neighborhoods, talking to neighbors, getting the votes, and that's how Obama got in, and he has to start remember how he got in. He'd better start working for the middle class and poor people.’"
“Thousands have descended on Madison, Wisconsin to make their voices heard and to prevent the demise of an already tottering labor movement.”
If this awful showing doesn’t tell us where the Democratic Party stands, nothing else will. While Democrats find new ways to leave their people twisting in the wind, Republicans in Congress are beginning an all out offensive to please their base.
They are once again threatening to de-fund public broadcasting and end all federal funding for birth control and for planned parenthood, which provides for a variety of health services. The Republican base never has to fear that its demands will go unmet. Their leaders understand the importance of keeping their supporters happy and never cease to use political theater to insure continued activism on the party’s behalf.
The Wisconsin crisis can be the catalyst for a new movement of political activism or it can be the nail in the coffin. If progressives refuse to acknowledge that they must begin to separate themselves from the Democrats, it is the coffin. Wisconsin represents a turning point in history. It is a wake up call about the Democratic Party, not the Republicans. The Republicans are doing what they have always done and the Democrats are allowing the travesty to take place. It is time to choose sides, and those who have always chosen the Democrats need to begin seeing that they must choose another way out.

To Be Fair
To be fair to the AFL-CIO and the AFSCME probably thought that implying that Obama was supporting the protesters wholeheartedly would encourage the protesters. The protests are gathering an amazing amount of support across the country and the AFL-CIO and the AFSCME seem to be doing a good job organizing things.
TEABAGGERS FAVORITE TARGETS
In spite of all of their tired, empty rhetoric about "taking back" America, you will never see mass rallies of Tea Party people on Wall Street against the banks and multi-nationals who ravaged them, their families and their communities, nor will they be seen "fighting the power" in any other financial district in any town or city near you. You can always find them massing on cue to attack other workers, especially those who are in unions, whom their mult-millionaire or in some cases, multi-billionaire corporate masters have demonized as selfish and over paid. You can also count on them to stage sustained attacks against those even less fortunate than they are. Wages for blue collar people, and for those in the lower middle class in America have falling or stagnant for over 30 years. If the multi-national corporations and their Tea Party stooges get their way, the next 30 years will be more of the same, or more likely, an even steeper and quicker slide into poverty and destitution for the vast majority of the American people. All this just so a precious few can accumulate ever more.

Black Folks in Chi & white folks in WI- Went for the Rope a Dope
Just like Black Folks in Chicago w the election of Rahm Emanuel [who got strong backing from Obama] - white folks in Wisconsin went for the Ole Okee Doke [or better yet - Rope a Dope]. In Wisconsin [& Ohio too] the newly elected GOP Gov(s)' first order of BIZ is to take away WI [& OH] Gov't workers collective bargaining rights- under the guise of fiscal responsibility [as these same type guys w Obama's help- just extended Bush's TAX Cuts for Rich folks]. So the people of WI are rightfully in an uproar but I keep saying to myself - But didn't ya'll so-called liberal / independent white folks just vote this BUM [Scott Walker] in - In the same wave that kicked out long time 'progressive' ex WI / US Senator Russ Feingold - for some so-called Tea-Party guy who is just like Scott Walker!!?? If ya'll hadn't voted these guys in ya'll probably wouldn't be facing these attacks on [mainly white] workers. BUT- Sometimes you get more than what you bargained for. And I know all about the Tea-Baggers / Koch Bros / Citizen United / FOX GOP propaganda machine- but that would all be more-or-less meaning-less if people were more interested in Truth instead of Hype. But when your locked in the BOX [trap] of the fake poly-trickal left vs right / Dem vs GOP / liberal vs conservative paradigm- unless you somehow break out of this Trap...
I know some supposedly liberal / independent Wisconsinites are going to plead ignorance [rather than the 5th] on Scott Walker's intent to go after Gov't workers' unions - but- The Real News on Paul Jay's Feb 24 2011 commentary played an excerpt of a campaign ad for Scott Walker [sponsored by 'Americans for Prosperity' funded by the Koch Bros] which talks specifically about targeting Gov't workers Unions. Then there this from Feb 24 2011 DemcracyNow! broadcast where WI Gov Walker thinking he's talking to a Koch Bro says: [I pulled out a picture of Ronald Reagan. And I said, "You know, this may seem a little melodramatic, but 30 years ago, Ronald Reagan," whose hundredth birthday we just celebrated the day before, "had one of the most defining moments of his political career, not just his presidency, when he fired the air traffic controllers." "To me, that moment was more important than just for labor relations or even the federal budget. That was the first crack in the Berlin Wall and the fall of communism, {thus he's equating busting unions w defeating communism - meaning people like him, 'I can't recollect'-Reagan, the FOXes, Koch Bros, OH Gov Kasich, etc- see any union member as a communist} because from that point forward, the Soviets and the Communists knew that Ronald Reagan wasn’t a pushover." And I said, "This may not have as broad of world implications, but in Wisconsin’s history"—little did I know how big it would be nationally—Wisconsin’s history, I said, "This is our moment. This is our time to change the course of history."] - And also this: [IAN MURPHY: {as David Koch} "We’ll back you any way we can. But what we were thinking about the crowds was planting some troublemakers." - GOV. SCOTT WALKER'{s response}: "You know, well, the only problem with—because we thought about that. The problem with—or my only gut reaction to that would be right now the lawmakers I’ve talked to have just completely had it with them. {and} The public is not really fond of this." - And also This: [WI Gov Scott Walker: "I've got layoff notices ready, we put out the at-risk notices, we'll announce Thursday, they'll go out early next week... we'll probably give five to six thousand state workers... at-risk notices for layoffs. We might ratchet that up a little bit too."]
So newly elected Govs Walker [WI] , Kasich [OH] & the Koch Bro phony Tea Baggers had going after Gov't worker unions in mind from the get-go. Further WI Gov Walker is apparently ready to use five to six thousand Wisconsin state workers as pawns in his political chess game- denying them the ability to feed their families- to use as leverage in his show-down w WI State workers' unions. We also see planting agent provocateurs to stir up trouble as an excuse for the storm troopers to crack down [IE: crack heads] -or- even as one IN official just said 'Shoot to Kill' WI protesters [sounds like what Boss Daley said during the 1968 riots after MLK assassination & Khadifi's orders to put down the current Libyan up-rising]- is standard operating procedure by the Fascist Gov'ts & the Power Elites. So why didn't so many working class white folks in WI & OH [& else-where] see this coming when they voted these guys in this past Nov? Could it be that so many of them where caught up in the FOX Noise Tea Bagger thinly disguised race-baiting [presented as anti-Obama, anti-AlQaeda] rhetoric - that they've been blind-sided??!!

Far more than that Nixie. Class Consciousness has been driven from the heads of the American people over the last 50 years. With that objective accomplished it then becomes easy task to bait the public with the image of the Black Welfare Mother or the Undocumented Mexican standing out front of Home Depot in order to generate false consciousness.
Since WWII business tax revenues dropped from 42% of all governement Revenues to less than 8%. In the last 30 years worker productivity has risen steadily while real income has dropped steadily. In the absence of that knowledge it is easy for the Scott Walkers AND the Barack Obamas of this world to feed us the line that "Times are Tough"
BULLSHIT !
The Kochs, the Buffetts, the Gates and the Soros(s) of this world are doing GREAT ! They are rolling in dough ! Yet few people understand this
And this phenomenon is not exclusive to the Right. Obama's ploy last week in announcing his Justice Department would cease defending DOMA is a clever gambit to lurer The Left back into Identity Politics as they are now plunging into Power Politics.

Divide & Conquer Tactics- Pits Public vs Private Sector Workers
From The Real News Network- Feb 28 2011:
Paul Jay: WI Gov Walker talked today about how one of the provisions of his bill will allow union members not to pay their dues, and they could use what he says will amount to almost $1,000 a year towards the new pension and health care benefits contributions he'd like them to be making. The unions respond that this is just another piece of trying to break the union altogether. In the battle in WI is the kind of publicity & TV ads, that attempts to split the workers in the private sector from the workers in the public sector, a lot of specific references to 3 plants, Kohler plumbing, Mercury Marine, & Harley Davidson, 3 big factories in WI where the workers took a 2-tier contract agreement, under the threat that the factories would leave WI if they didn't agree. So workers that are already there are going to make around $22.50 / hr & they have a 5yr wage freeze, new workers are going to start at $14.50 / hr. And then these people are being told, well, you should support WI Gov Walker so that public sector workers get cut as well, because then it will all be fair. What do you make of this split they're trying to engineer?
FRANK HAMMER, FMR. PRESIDENT, UAW LOCAL 909: The Corp / Biz Elites have been threating to taking our livelihoods away & sending them to non-union areas or overseas. That's been their leverage, especially with the free trade agreements that have been passed over the last 20 years [IE: GATT & NAFTA - So this is on-going since at least Reagan]. But they don't have that leverage on public workers. They can't move the WI's Gov't to North Carolina... Every time they attack one sector of the workforce they use that to bring along the other sector of the workforce & slowly but surely ratchet us all down to the level of mere survival...
JAY: When I talk to un-unionized, lower-paid workers, they're resentful about higher-paid, unionized private sector workers... Is this having an impact, that people resent the sort of job security that public sector workers have that private don't?
Hammer: Between public & private, one in eight or one in nine are w unions. The vast majority of working-class don't enjoy the benefits of either private sector workers in unions or public sector workers in unions. Jealousy is really an amazingly destructive human emotion. Folks like the Koch brothers & all these anti-union institutions in the US are making use of jealousy to say, well, if I can't have it (I'm speaking as a non-union worker), then why should they have it? It's jealousy gone amok being stirred & manipulated by folks like the Koch brothers, who would like to do away with all collective organization of the working class as a whole. A friend of mine today told me they saw an article in The NY-Times quoting a UAW member from a Jaynesville plant who was laid off. He's unemployed- so he's supporting WI Gov Walker because he's feeling like, since I've lost my job & I'm now being asked to pay taxes to pay for what public workers now have that he doesn't have, then he feels resentment and doesn't want to do it. I think it's a question of unions reaching out to the non-union sector, reaching out to the community to explain that unions are the best thing since sliced bread, - the more of us that gather inside unions & work for our behalf, the better off we're all going to be. As long as we non-union workers gang up on union workers, we're all going to lose.
JAY: How much fault do you put towards union leadership for over the last few decades not being as vigorous about unionizing non-unionized workers as they could have been? Certain sectors of the working class got very privileged, while most of the other working class became totally unorganized. Maybe there's a bit of chickens coming home to roost here [Due to a Selfish / Darwinistic I got mine so You get yours - Look out for number one- Survival of the Fittest Mentality]?...
This is how the Power Elites pit people against each other - to their advantage [& our dis-advantage]- the old Divide & Conquer Strategy. Pit- Black vs Brown vs white, - young vs old, - men vs women vs children, teachers vs parents vs students, - private sector workers vs public sector workers, - union workers vs non-union workers, - employed vs un-employed, - Christian vs Muslim vs Jew, etc, etc, etc [The Ole Willie Lynch letter tactics]... If we keep falling for this Ole Okee Doke [Rope a Dope] We're All Gonna Lose [IE: We're all done for].
RE- BSeale: Interesting That You've NOTED Obama on DOMA
To BSeale: Its interesting that you've noted that Obama / Holder's DoJ has pulled back from the 'Defense of Marriage Act'. In some of my previous posts here at BAR you'll see I've been anticipating that so-called 'gay' marriage might become the law of the land on Obama's watch. So Mr Constitutional Law Prof can remember the Constitution when it comes to pulling back from DOMA & DADT, but he couldn't remember it when the Repugs [& many / most Dems] passed the BLATANTLY UnConstitutional: De-fund ACORN Act [which he signed]; - The Bush / Cheney / NeoCons {un}Patriot Act [which he signed onto]; - The George W{ater-board} Bush, Dick{Darth-Vader}Cheney, Don{I Know Unknowns}Rumsfeld wars of aggression based on lies & boastings about torture [Impeachment {let alone prosecution} is off the table - because - We must look forward not back]; etc... BUT- So-called gay marriage as well as so-called Freedom of Choice [of Abortions] falls in line w the long time obsession that many / most {white}Power Elites have had for population control [IE: Eugenics] regarding Black, Brown, 3rd World Peoples & even some / many poor whites. Further many Chemical, Phamaceutical, Commercial Food Processing / Producing Corps have been exposing the public to an array of gender-bending hormones & chemicals for the past several decades- which they neither intend to clean up or remove from their products. Plus many of the Power Elites are closet bi-sexuals anyway- no matter what their public poly-trickal orientation might be. As you've noted Obama & many so-called liberal poly-tricians use these kind of issues as left cover - as they sell the people out to the power elites. This is a page straight out of Slick-Willie Clinton's play-book.
So Mr Constitutional Law Prof
So Mr Constitutional Law Prof can bethink the Constitution aback it comes to affairs aback from DOMA & DADT, but he couldn't bethink it aback the Repugs [& abounding / best Dems] anesthetized the BLATANTLY UnConstitutional: De-fund ACORN Act [which he signed]; - The Bush / Cheney / NeoCons {un}Patriot Act [which he active onto]; - The George W{ater-board} Bush, Dick{Darth-Vader}Cheney, Don{I Know Unknowns}Rumsfeld wars of assailment based on lies & boastings about ache [Impeachment {let abandoned prosecution} is off the table - because - We charge attending advanced not back]; etc... BUT- Alleged gay alliance as able-bodied as alleged Freedom of Choice [of Abortions] avalanche in band w the continued time attraction that abounding / best {white}Power Elites accept had for citizenry ascendancy [IE: Eugenics] apropos Black, Brown, 3rd World Peoples & alike some / abounding poor whites. Further abounding Chemical, Phamaceutical, Commercial Food Processing / Producing Corps accept been advertisement the accessible to an arrangement of gender-bending hormones & chemicals for the accomplished several decades- which they neither intend to apple-pie up or abolish from their products. Plus abounding of the Ability Elites are closet bi-sexuals anyway- no amount what their accessible poly-trickal acclimatization ability be. As you've acclaimed Obama & abounding alleged advanced poly-tricians use these affectionate of issues as larboard awning - as they advertise the bodies out to the ability elites. This is a folio beeline out of Slick-Willie Clinton's play-book. tiffany necklace \ tiffany pendant | tiffany charm | pandora sale | pandora jewellery | pandora charm |
Thanks Ms Kimberly for
Thanks Ms Kimberly for another shot of truth with no chaser. It is absolutely incomprehensible and beyond the pale any rhyme reason or logic that the talking Butt heads on the alphabet news networks can say with a straight face the pile of lies that they are spitting out about Libya. I mean you have to be on drugs or some mind altering substance to tell the kind of stone cold bold face lies that this group is constantly yelling and screaming. It is even more unbelievable that the so much of the general public buys into this tsunami of bullsh*t. There are way too many folks (I’m not even going to talk about the Obamabots who are still inebriated from the Obama-Aide or still can’t get their heads out of the fog from too much Obama Chronic) that are biting on this crap hook line and sinker standing on dry ground. It is really scary that so many folks can be bamboozled by what David Swanson calls “Our Billion Dollar Turd Sandwich” read the article here
