Survival and Dignity in an Afghan Winter

    by Kathy Kelly

In this season of stale appeals to support the supposed lesser of two evils, Kathy Kelly reminds us of the actual cost Afghan women and children and their families are paying for Barack Obama's decision to continue the war in Afghanistan at least till 2014. It's a set of facts that ought to be constantly before us --- how will our votes and our actions after this election impact their struggles for dignity and survival?

The Mother of All Blowbacks is Coming

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

Forces set in motion more than three decades ago by President Jimmy Carter’s CIA will force the United States out of much of the Middle East and North Africa. “The West has once again empowered fundamentalist forces that will inevitably turn against Washington, the Greatest Infidel of all.” The U.S. cannot possibly control the jihadis it has armed and unleashed upon the world.

    Freedom Rider: Protesting NATO

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

The NATO summit meeting later this month, in Chicago, will be the place “where new Obama administration restrictions on civil liberties will be put into full effect.” Nevertheless, it is necessary to protest NATO’s role as “the armed wing for European and American elites who control the destiny not only of the capitalist nations they represent but of people around the world.” NATO is a club for killers.

Bragging About Killing Osama bin Laden: Old Blowbacks and New

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

President Obama, like the joker in the White House before him, owes Osama bin Laden for making him appear sufficiently lethal-minded. But it was U.S. the alliance with Islamic Jihad in Afghanistan that, ultimately, made “Osama bin Laden became, arguably, the most recognizable face on the planet.” Then came the “blowback,” when the “Americans found they could not control the Islamic forces they had unleashed.” The U.S. once again aligns itself with jihadis against Syria – and another blowback is coming.

The U.S. Empire’s Achilles Heel: Its Barbaric Racism

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

American racism will always cripple its ability to occupy non-white countries, whose people the U.S. fundamentally disrespects. “The United States cannot help but be a serial abuser of the rights of the people it occupies, especially those who are thought of as non-white, because it is a thoroughly racist nation.” The latest atrocities in Afghanistan are just par for the course.

Obama Deserves Impeachment for War Policies, But Few Dare Say So – and Most of Them are Republicans

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

It has fallen mainly to Republicans to challenge President Obama’s military flaunting of both U.S. and international law. A North Carolina congressman named Jones has submitted a resolution that would hold Obama liable to impeachment if he attacks Syria or any other country without an act of authorization from Congress. It is an action that “should have emanated from the Congressional Progressive and Black Caucuses, rather than the Republican Right.”

    Freedom Rider: Pissing on Afghanistan

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

U.S. troops commit ceaseless atrocities against the peoples they have been sent to subdue and occupy. The victims include women, children, the elderly, the armed, the unarmed, those that run away from the Americans and those who reach out to the foreign soldiers. All categories of the occupied are killable. War and occupation is the root crime, from which all the atrocities flow. “Unless the American people declare that they will no longer accept a government that has troops stationed in most of the world’s nations, wars and terror will be the norm.”

Freedom Rider: American Murder in Pakistan

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

The lies began at the very top, with the president’s own words.” The President of the United States went before the American people – and the world – lied about a U.S. spy held for killing two Pakistanis, and blatantly misrepresented the laws governing diplomatic immunity. U.S. corporate media knew the “diplomat” was really a spy, but misled their readers. If respect starts with the truth, then the U.S. and its corporate media have no respect for the community of nations or its own citizens.

Americans Are Deeply Involved In Afghan Drug Trade

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

The U.S. set the stage for the Afghan (and Pakistan) war eight years ago, when it handed out drug dealing franchises to warlords on Washington's payroll. Now the Americans, acting as Boss of All Bosses, have drawn up hit lists of rival, “Taliban” drug lords. “It is a gangster occupation, in which U.S.-allied drug dealers are put in charge of the police and border patrol.”

Hillary Clinton: A Very Ugly American

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

Having forced Pakistan to launch a civil war to protect American interests, the U.S. dispatches Hillary Clinton to rub salt in Pakistani wounds. The Anti-Diplomat lectures the locals on tax collection and helping the poor while her government daily violates the country's sovereignty. “Americans believe they are the only nation that deserves to have a sense of dignity – and so they relentlessly strip away the dignity of others.”

    Obama’s “Af-Pak” War: Destabilizing a Nuclear Nation

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

President Obama has succeeded in putting his mark on Afghanistan and Pakistan, in ways that will come back to haunt the U.S. Two million people have been displaced by the Pakistiani army's scorched earth campaign against the Taliban - actions demanded by the Obama administration. "The Pakistani people are universally aware that their army was browbeaten, bullied and coerced, superpower-style, to launch a scorched earth attack on Taliban-influenced regions." The administration is destabilizing Pakistan, and deepening its people's hatred for the U.S.

The Grant Park Dream Has Died

    by Paul A. Moore
What a difference four months make. On November 4, 2008, tears "tears flowed like a mighty river" from half a million pairs of eyes in Chicago's Grant Park, where Barack Obama made his victory speech. Today, "Obama has no intention of withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq and ending that war," "there will be no genuine single payer national health care system under this president," and Obama invites "voucher and charter school boosters to the White House." The dream has turned into a hoax.

    The CIA and Narco-Imperialism

"Leon Panetta's nomination is Barack Obama's symbolic statement that his administration is making a clean break with the CIA's recent past." But the agency will never relinquish its role as "main architect of the international narcotics network."
